Ruben Tejada had another extended plate appearance Tuesday night, one in which he saw 11 pitches. Overall, Tejada came to the plate five times and saw 32 pitches. It seems like Tejada has had a plethora of PA where he sees a bunch of pitches which made me wonder what his average pitches per plate appearance (P/PA) was. Baseball-Reference provides this information and I was shocked to find that Tejada had just a 3.80 P/PA this season, compared to a league-average rate of 3.81 P/PA.

Here are some other stats I found while poking around on B-R that I was previously unaware:

Mike Baxter leads the team by batting with the platoon advantage 90% of the time. Scott Hairston has it just 52% of the time.

Daniel Murphy has the best swing-and-miss percentage, completely whiffing just 9% of the time.

The league average for swinging at the first pitch is 27%. Only two Mets are above average in this category, with David Wright offering at the first pitch 28% of the time while Ike Davis far and away leads with a 37% rate.

Tejada has had just four 3-0 counts this year.

The Mets have had 258 3-0 counts this year and have swung in this situation just 14 times. I think 12 of those have come in the last two weeks.

Matt Harvey held opponents to a .338 SLG mark the best on the team among qualified pitchers. Meanwhile, opponents teed off on Jeremy Hefner to the tune of a .483 SLG. However, Harvey’s ISO is .138 and Hefner’s is .177, so a good portion of the SLG against Hefner is comprised of singles.

Jonathon Niese leads the team with eight no-decisions.

The Mets are 21-10 (.677) in games started by R.A. Dickey and 49-74 (.398) when any other pitcher takes the mound.

Ramon Ramirez leads the team’s relievers with 17 games where he completed more than three outs.

Dillon Gee allowed 12 HR this year, with 10 of them coming in Citi Field.

Opponents have been successful on 19 of 22 SB attempts when Chris Young is on the mound.

This dod not fall into the “uplifting” story I thought it might. I still wonder if the Mets lead the league in batting behind in the count. Every time I look up its 0-1, 0-2, 1-2 etc

The Mets have 474 PA with an 0-2 count, which ranks 12th in the National League. The Pirates have the most with 594.

Thanks for digging that gem up Brian. I tried to dig that up in BR but couldnt figure out how. 12 out of 15 pretty much confirms my fears. That puts so much pressure on, it is hardly a surprise we have little offense. Add in the Hudgens tactic of taking first pitches which come amply as strikes down main street and we are really looking at 2 strikes per out. We get behind, get crap pitches, swing for defense, and make lousy contact.

Time for “the system” and Hudgens and Warthen to be shelved. (perhaps Sandy too)

Tejada’s walk frequency is disturbingly low.His strikeout frequency higher than I’d like.He simply has to get on base to be worth anything as an offensive player. He brings nothing else to the table offensively.
