1981 PERMA-GRAPHICS DAVE KINGMAN

Keeping the Kingman kontent koming at Kard of the Week.

And while it seems appropriate to harp on K’s when Dave Kingman is involved, for love of Ray Davies I’ll give it a rest…

I remember when these Perma-Graphics “credit cards” first showed up at the local Ha-Cha stationery store. I shunned them, because they felt condescending.

They were to baseball cards what Fisher-Price Corn Popper Push Toys were to two-stroke Honda lawn mowers.

“Wook,” they seemed to say, “You can have your vewy own cwedit cawd, just wike Mommy and Daddy. And oh yeah– gweed is good.”

The cards came packed in a display box with no individual wrapping, which helped ensure that all of the best players would be cherry-picked in no time, leaving behind a box full of Gorman Thomas and Dusty Baker. And yes, Dave Kingman.

What I didn’t notice at the time is that the cards carry a very small TCG Inc. copyright on the back, which likely means that Topps provided all of the photos in the set.

Perma-Graphics issued these cards for another two years after this initial offering, and then disappeared quietly into the ’80s night…

So, I take it you never collected that Donruss set in the mid 90s that looked even more like a credit card?

I’m betting Ray Davies had zero input into all of the “K” things surrounding the group in the 1960s. Outside of the name itself, of course. My favorite Ray line is when he said – “It’s a kink-hating world.”

I have the Seaver one from that set. Pretty cool…for a Red card. =;)

Yeah that 1995 Studio set was pretty lame. Innovative idea, but SOOOOOOO 1990s!
