The games have begun to be played and through 9 there are some good things and some bad things going on for the New York Mets.  This series is only focused on the minor leaguers who are playing in the games and the Met minor leaguer of the week for Week 1 is Zach Lutz.  He’s been one of the steadiest hitters.  If only he had more positional flexibility he’d be a definite bench player for 2013.

Game 1: NYM 5 Was 3 – The story of this game isn’t the minor leaguers.  The story was that Ruben Tejada took Stephen Strasburg deep on a full count in the first.  The Mets would get 7.0 scoreless innings of relief and minor leaguers would factor only on the pitching side of the ball.  The biggest winner from this game is Mazzoni who earns the first “Game Ball”.

Winners:

Losers:

  • Zach Lutz – 0 for 1
  • Reese Havens – 0 for 1 (But hey… he played?)

Game 2: Hou 7 NYM 7 – The score would go back and forth but the only truly important thing is that Matt Harvey looked okay and that some of the minor league hitters… hit.        On the negative side it was all sorts of bad for Familia who put forward a real stinker in his first outing.

Winners:

  • Josh Satin – 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBI “Game Ball” (1)
  • Jordany Valdespin – 1 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBI
  • Wilfredo Tovar – 1 for 2 with an RBI

Losers:

  • Jeurys Familia – 1.0 IP, 2 Hits, 3 Runs, 2 ER, 2 BB and 1 K
  • Travis d’Arnaud – 0 for 3

Game 3: Was 6 NYM 4 – Not the greatest game for anyone on the Mets, although we all like seeing Ike Davis go yard.  One thing to note is that through 9 innings, Met pitchers issued no walks.

Winners:

  • Zach Lutz – 1 for 1 with a double (RBI and a Run) “Game Ball” (1)
  • Juan Lagares – 1 for 1 with 2 RBI
  • Elvin Ramires – 1.2 IP, 2 Hits, 1 ER, 0 BB and 4 K’s
  • Wilmer Flores – 0 for 2 but was part of 2 double plays

Losers:

Game 4: Mia 7 NYM 5 – You can get down on Mejia or you can give up on Niuwenhuis but this game showed you one important thing.  The Mets gave up a big score and faught back.

Winners:

  • Wilfredo Tovar – 1 for 2 with a CLUTCH RBI single “Game Ball” (1)
  • Cory Mazzoni – 3.0 Perfect Innings but no K’s
  • Josh Satin – 1 for 1 with a Run and an RBI
  • Travis d’Arnaud – 1 for 1 with a Sac Fly
  • Jeurys Familia – 1.0 IP, 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BB and 0 K

Losers:

  • Jenrry Mejia – 1.0 IP, 5 Runs, 4 ER, 1 BB and 2 K’s (He got spooked by his error… blew up and settled down… not as bad as you might think)
  • Reese Havens – 0 for 1 with a BB and a blown opportunity
  • Juan Lagares – 0 for 4 with 1 K
  • Zach Lutz – 0 for 3 with 1 K
  • Hansel Robles – 2.0 IP, 2  Solo HRs (No prospect just out of Savannah should have to pitch to Giancarlo Stanton)

Game 5: Stl 12 NYM 4 – This game turned ugly in the 3rd and just stayed ugly.  You can tell that people didn’t do so well when the “Game Ball” goes to the guy who had a walk. (And only a walk.)

Winners:

  • Zach Lutz – 0 for 0 with a walk. “Game Ball” (2)

Losers:

  • Matt Den Dekker – 0 for 2 with 2 K’s
  • Darin Gorski – 2.0 IP, 3 Hits, 4 ER, 3 BB’s and 0 K
  • Reese Havens – 0 for 1 with a K
  • Robert Carson – 2.0 IP, 2 Hits, 1 ER

Game 6: NYM 4 Was 4 – A much better game but still nobody standing out to an extreme among the prospects… unless you consider Collin Cowgill a prospect (which I don’t).

Winners:

  • Travis d’Arnaud – 2 for 3 with 2 Runs “Game Ball” (1)
  • Jordany Valdespin – 2 for 3 with 1 Run
  • Rafael Montero – 2.0 IP, 3 Hits, 1 ER, 0 BB and 0 K

Losers:

  • Juan Lagares – 0 for 2 with 2 K’s
  • Wilmer Flores – 0 for 1 (Needs to start hitting… also needs to start starting)
  • Cesar Puello – 0 for 1 with an Error
  • Reese Havens – 0 for 1
  • Wilfredo Tovar – 0 for 1 with an Error
  • Matt Den Dekker – 1 for 2 with a Run (But ANOTHER K)

Game 7: NYM 6 Det 2 – Jon Niese was the real story but there were a few key performances from the minor leaguers.

Winners:

  • Jeurys Familia – 1.0 IP, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BB’s and 2 K’s “Game Ball” (1)
  • Jordany Valdespin – 1 for 3 with a SB
  • Zach Lutz – 0 for 0 with another BB

Losers:

  • Gonzalez Germen – 1.0 IP, 5 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB and 0 K
  • Matt Den Dekker – 0 for 4 with ANOTHER K (Though not against Verlander)
  • Wilmer Flores – 0 for 1 with a CS

Game 8:  Mia 8 NYM 8 – The Met prospects came up big-time with a comeback tie against Miami… but isn’t Miami supposed to be terrible?

Winners:

  • Zach Lutz – 2 for 3 with a double, a Run and 2 RBI “Game Ball” (3)
  • Travis d’Arnaud – 1 for 2 with a double, a Run and an RBI
  • Wilmer Flores – 1 for 1 but no time in the field

Losers:

  • Hansel Robles – 1.2 IP, 4 Hits, 5 ER, 2 BB’s and 2 K’s (Guy needs to be sent to minor league camp)
  • Juan Lagares – 0 for 2
  • Collin McHugh – 1.1 IP, 3 Hits, 1 ER, 0 BB and 0 K

Game 9: Mia 6 NYM 4 – I have to say that the big story is a good start by Dillon Gee but it’s sad to see Cory Mazzoni struggle after his solid start to the season.

Winners:

  • Josh Satin – 1 for 2 with 2 BB’s “Game Ball” (2)
  • Juan Lagares – 1 for 1 with a double

Losers:

  • Cory Mazzoni – 2.0 IP, 4 Hits, 2 ER, 3 BB’s and 2 K’s
  • Robert Carson – 2.0 IP, 1 Hit (A solo HR)
