2013 TOPPS HERITAGE MEMORABLE MOMENTS R.A. DICKEY

As promised, I’ve now opened a full box of 2013 Topps Heritage.

And I am here to tell you that this set is very generous in the R.A. Dickey department.

I mean, it has more R.A.s than a college dorm. It has more Dickeys than an Orvis catalog.

Our dear, departed Cy Young winner appears on three separate pitching leaders cards, a regular-issue card and its numerous parallels, and various and sundry insert sets.

Among those inserts is this Memorable Moments card, which commemorates Dickey’s back-to-back one hitters from June of last year.

This was of course a staggering achievement, but what really makes this card for me is the comic on the reverse. It pictures an old man reclined in what appears to be a hospital bed, watching a game on a rabbit-eared TV. He’s pumping his fist and exhorting the pitcher: “C’mon buddy! Put some extra mustard on it!”

There is a caption below the image: “Pops always yelled louder when watching the away games!”

For what it’s worth, my theory is that the old man in the drawing is actually Bazooka Joe, bedridden with diabetes and incipient senility, thanks to the copious amounts of sugar he ingested in his youth…

It’s sad that he has gotten off to a poor start. He was hit hard in Spring Training and in his first two starts.

Another twist: fans often root for the “ex’s” to falter, and the trade recipients to prosper making our team look good. There must be some serious mixed emotions among fans.

I think if you polled 100 Mets fans — 100 of them are rooting for Dickey to win the AL Cy Young Award in 2013.

As for the cartoon – I guess the less said the better. Still, I understand that rabbit ears are easy to draw but really — is that the best they could do?

I really hope R.A. pulls it together. That said, we may come out as bandits in this trade.

I know we have to hope that the prospects we received do well, but there is no reason we can’t wish RA the best.I certainly will be rooting for him to win another Cy Young and that he has another steller season. But every once in awhile I wish he never won that Cy Young – maybe then he would still be with us. I guess I will always miss him
