2000 IONIX AWESOME POWERS MIKE PIAZZA

Continuing on with our brief series of goofily named insert cards, this week we present for your consideration a 2000 Upper Deck Ionix Mike Piazza Awesome Powers.

Yeah baby!

Ionix was a one-and-done offering from Upper Deck, and it is as much a product of the year 2000 as Y2K hangovers and Subway Series remorse. It contains a swath of tech-happy insert sets with names like Atomic, Pyrotechnics, BIOrhythm, and Shockwave.

And then there’s this hot mess. These Awesome Powers cards are printed on a gold holofoil stock, with the player image and groovy background lettering slightly embossed.

The card backs repeat the basic design motif, but unfortunately the text is far from shagadelic. For example, this card tells us the following about Piazza, in perfect performance-reviewese:

“His run production and team leadership make him an indispensable asset for any team.”

The good news is that according to the latest price guides, this particular card is worth… one MILLION dollars!

If these were the ideas that made it to market, it would be entertaining to see the ones that were nixed.
