Daisuke MatsuzakaWhen Daisuke Matsuzaka was first posted, I wanted the Mets to win the bid for him. A few years ago I proposed a trade of down-on-their luck pitchers, with the Mets sending Oliver Perez to Boston for Matsuzaka. When they finally picked him off the scrap heap, I was generally in favor of the move.

But enough is enough. There’s no reason to subject either the fans or the other Mets players to another outing by Matsuzaka. In three starts with the Mets, the one-time star has allowed 15 ER in 12.1 IP and the aesthetics of his starts are 100 times worse. Keeping him around annoys the fan base, doesn’t thrill his fielders and kills the bullpen.

It’s hard to imagine the Mets giving Matsuzaka another start. They recently went dumpster diving again, this time to pick up Aaron Harang, who if memory serves they were interested in this past offseason.. Unfortunately, Harang looks as cooked as the man he would be replacing. With pitcher-friendly Safeco Field as his home park, Harang had a 5.76 ERA in 22 starts.

Innings limits preclude the Mets from calling up top prospects Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard. Jacob deGrom is maxed out on his innings and has an injury to boot. Seemingly there’s no internal candidate to promote.

But, the Mets do have a pitcher at Double-A who has been lights out since returning from an early-season injury, meaning that unlike the pitchers mentioned above, he is nowhere near his 150-inning cap.

Darin Gorski has pitched just 92.1 innings so far in 2013. But those innings have been fantastic, especially the numbers he’s posted in Double-A. With Binghamton, Gorski is 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA. And while he struggled with the gopher ball last year, he’s allowed just 1 HR in 78.2 IP.

Gorski is 25 and there’s no reason to baby him at this point. It’s time to promote him and let him get five or six starts the remainder of the year to see if he can be an option for the major league rotation in 2014.

There’s nothing to be gained by holding him back at this point. While the B-Mets are playoff-bound, and Gorski would likely be their second-best pitcher behind Syndergaard, they have enough depth to cover for his absence. Logan Verrett has 12 Wins while Erik Goeddel and Mark Cohoon have nine apiece, giving the B-Mets enough pitching for the postseason.

The Mets need to promote from within and give Gorski the next shot in the rotation. The last thing they need is another failed pitcher from another organization whose best days are behind them. Harang was a solid pitcher in the majors for a long time. But his days as an MLB-quality hurler are over. It’s time to give a shot to a homegrown kid. And Gorski has more than earned the chance with his pitching in 2013.

He’s horrible—- he doesn’t have the ability to pitch to MLB hitters, at this point…as I noted PREVIOUSLY:

Dice K pitches in Heavy Traffic with NO Stuff…..He’s NOT going to get “Luckier” with more exposure. BABIP is highly dependent on whether the ball is hit in PITCHERS COUNTS or HITTERS COUNTS. When the batter is hitting against a “low stuff” pitcher in a HITTERS COUNT the results will favor the Batter…..and then, there’s THIS question: “Did you actually see Dice K Pitch!!!???”. EYE TEST RESULTS====He’s Horrible!!!!”

  • Eraff

Harang is NEXT…I see no reason to NOT try Gorski–It may be the only chance he gets to open their eyes as to whether he’s anything close to an MLB Possibility. It cannot be that EVERY player must be held back for future contract considerations.

Because Terry’s an ASSHOLE!! The worse in game manager the mets have had in a long time! He
keeps opening his mouth and he keeps putting his foot in it!! Gorski is a great Idea but I
was wondering if Montero is on an innings limit and can’t be used up here why does AAA keep
pitching him? Can’t he pitch the same innings up here? Maybe its a super 2 thing?

Wow, reading your post gave me a little bit of a rush. Someone who speaks the truth in its entirety.

Oh my GOD you are so on point, I agree with what you had to say and too bad Montero is on an innings limit and I would not doubt he’s also one of the super 2’s because you know as alderson always says ITS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY, bullshit!!! I would like to also see Gorski I follow the minors all the time, and he looked great not that long ago then had a down spot but it would be great to find out if he could be a trade chip if he pitches well

Hey the good news is that TC said Dice K is on the hill for the indians.

  • Eraff

there are 40 man roster considerations w Montero—he does not need to be added to the 40 man roster this off season (based on service time)….I am not sure about Gorski. This IS a legit consideration… you don’t want to pinch yourself on space and lose players this off season because you have eaten the slot.

    • Brian Joura

Gorski needs to be on the 40-man this year or risk being lost in the Rule 5 Draft.

  • peter

Does bringing up Gorski affect his arbitration years? Isn’t the Met organization embarrassed by what they are providing as quality major league starts? Or is SA doing his “best” to finish bottom 10?

    • Brian Joura

As for arbitration – potentially, yes. Realistically, what are the chances that he’s in the rotation for the Mets in 2016 when that would factor in to play? I would hope that if Gorski proved to be one of the top five among a group that included Harvey, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Montero, Niese, Gee, Mejia, Hefner and deGrom that the Mets would live with the consequences of starting his arb clock early.

  • Metsense

This one is not TC’s fault. There is an imposed innings limit on Wheeler, the bullpen gets very thin without Torres in it, and Gorski is in the AA playoffs and that game is a nice showcase for his talents and the fans in Bingo town. That leaves Dice K and now Harang. Next week, if Sandy doesn’t promote Gorski then that will be a real lost opportunity and a mistake.

  • eric

Brian…the Roster situation confirms what I thought about Gorski. The fact that he needs to be added to the 40 or be eligible for rule 5 would be a strong reason to give him a MLB look right now. I don’t think there’s any way to keep him if he’s non-rostered…even though he’s “only” been at the Eastern League, someone will nab him in rule 5.

The Mets may have decided that they’re going to Roster him anyway….and they may legitimately feel that an MLB start would hurt him now. It tales a lot of development to become a “Jamie Moyer”.

  • David Groveman

It’s worth a shot. Let Gorski finish the AA playoffs.
