carlosBeltranThere has been a growing conversation among fans and reporters about the possibility of the Mets bringing back OF Carlos Beltran, although the organizations interest is unknown.

Does it make sense for the Mets to bring back one-time fan favorite Carlos Beltran? I sit on the fence with this one, but opt to say yes under certain conditions.

First off, there is a group inside the Mets fan base who blame Beltran for the problems have had in recent years. It’s gotten so bad that some have decided to poke fun at this group by using #BlameBeltran, to blame Beltran for outrageous things (i.e. Matt Harvey getting hurt). Since the events of 2006, Beltran has been viewed very negatively by some fans.

During the All-Star Game festivities, Carlos Beltran and Jeff Wilpon were seen talking. Supposedly this meeting was to patch up things between the two and bury the past.

Now, with the past in the past and Beltran an upcoming free agent, speculation has begun about a Flushing reunion. The 38-year-old is most likely going to look for a two year deal. With a free agent market filled with top-tier guys like Shin-Soo Choo and Jacoby Elisbury, a middle tiered guy like Beltran makes sense for the Mets.

He won’t command as much money as the others do.  He’s still got a lot left in the tank. He can play outfield, a huge need for this team. And no one needs to be reminded about what he can do in the playoffs.

So he’s a fit for the Mets. They should splurge a little bit and go get him. Bu the question remains: Does he want to be back?

2006 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth for how the season ended. Many blamed Beltran for that, and how wrong they were. The next couple of years didn’t go so well either and it ended with Sandy Alderson shipping him to San Francisco for Zack Wheeler. Now, three years later, a potential reunion is in the works.  How satisfying could it be for Beltran to come back to New York and help lead the Mets again?

Alderson is going to look at many options this offseason, both in free agency and through trading, and will have to make a short-list of people to target. If I were him, Carlos Beltran would be at the top of that list.  And Mets fans should welcome him back with open arms.

In the end, the decision mostly comes down to dollars and cents.

I for won wouldn’t mind bringing Beltran back on a short term deal this off season, since he could still be productive and is one of the Top 5 position players in team history. Unfortunately, since Jeff Wilpon is an idiot and can’t get over one nasty curveball thrown in 2006(according to sources who sat in on a meeting with Wilpon and swore secrecy), the Mets won’t bring him back.

YES YES YES YES could U imagine the hitting with him hitting behind David Wright………..I see good things happening for 2014. Lets go METS………

To me, this is about who else they get. Abreu comes here? Sign Beltran tomorrow. If they have to trade Puello to get an OF (Jose Bautista, Cargo), sign Beltran. Beltran is the only big signing? I wouldn’t do it. In that case I’d rather trade for a young OF like Josh Reddick, who can be had fairly cheap and allow money to be used elsewhere.

Sign Beltran, sign Beltran, sign Beltran, did I mention to sign Beltran, you know he can hit and most importantly get hits with men in scoring position! He will drive in runs and he
will protect Wright and you know he won’t fold under the pressure of playing in NY(see Jason
Bay)but you also need to sign another outfielder like Byrd or Choo or make a trade because
you can’t depend on Duda or Davis to hit for power and drive in runs! Abreu would have taken
care of that but that ship has sailed since the mets didn’t bid on him and the deadline was last Saturday!!

The Mets need two outfielders that are better than average. If the Mets choose to go the free agent route for one or both then I would want in order Choo, Ellsbury, Granderson, Beltran, Byrd, Cruz and DeJesus. If the Mets get to the point where Beltran is at the top of the list, I see no problem in 2 years and 20-26M.

But the Mets are not a playoff team Chris! Beltran had his chance to pit the Mets into the world Series and failed. So much for your point that Beltran is a dangerous hitter in the playoffs.
Metsense. 20-26 million for what? Don’t you think it would be a better option to pay 15-17 million for a tire 1 player? You forgot Beltran offered the Yankees a discount before he signed with the Mets?If you want a team that will win and put fans in the seats sign Choo AND Ellsbury. Then you can put Tejada in the 8th hole and leave him alone. As the young pitchers continue to progress the team will not falter offensively as the Mets continue to rebuild.

Pete, please reread my post. I am not choosing Beltran over Choo or Ellsbury.

You do know Beltran’s #’s in the postseason, don’t you? And of course that he singlehandedly got the Mets to that game 7 and had 3 homeruns in that series?
The best curveball pitcher in the game threw the best curveball. Live with it.
Beltran was BY FAR, the best all around player the Mets ever had.
While he won’t be near that player anymore, he can teach this team a thing or two about Professionalism, baserunning (PLEASE!!) hitting the cut off man, etc.

If Beltran wants to play meaningful games in October he’ll stay in St. Louis.
If Beltran wants to enhance his stats for the HOF he’ll consider the Yanks or Phillies before going to CitiField.

Sorry I did not read your post and saw your pecking order after I posted my remark.

I would bring back anyone who can be an upgrade. But they need to look at more long term solutions. I actually really like to see them get Kemp for some reason I think he will flourish in NY and sign Ellsbury. I like Choo but he makes me nervous with the way he hits lefties. Mets really only need 2 outfielders and a shortstop. I still think Ike can come around if he is not the one expected to carry the load.

Now that I had some time to think about it. Do you really believe the Mets will be the highest bidder for his services? With so many teams looking for a solid dependable right fielder how can the Mets compete? Will probably need to offer him at the very least 2 maybe 3 years at 23-15 million per year.
