I have been listening to WFAN since I was a baby… alright my Dad’s been listening since then but I was in the car.  The point is I’ve come to relish all non Mike Francessa elements of WFAN and it’s been my go-to station for driving since I’ve been allowed to drive.  As WFAN begins its hapless descent into being a Yankee publicity station I would tend to wish to follow the Mets to their new home.  Problem is, WOR is not a sports radio station.

WORWOR has all the schlocky boring radio talk that I groan at when I can’t find anything better because I’m driving through Odessa, NY.  Medical advice is all well and good but I hoped for something more than a radio listing for game broadcasts.

My dial is more or less glued to 660 and it has been since 2001 but wouldn’t it behoove the Mets to be on a station where their fans can… you know, interact?  We tune in before the game, listen to some pre-game analysis, listen to Howie Rose, call in after the game to talk about it and the next day listen to analysis.  One stop shopping is a good thing… especially in radio.

The fact is that Met fans will still be tuning into WFAN and not WOR and that people will be listening to Yankee radio and not Met radio.  Will Met fans turn their dials to 710 at game time?  Yes, but for how long?

I think that the Mets made a bad move in letting WFAN get away and a worse move in signing up to join schlocky boring news network WOR.  Time will tell but I think the Mets should be WORried.

This is going to suck. Just something I have to set my radio in my cat to, but this is definetly going to suck………….

      Perhaps we’ve just been spoiled

You’re lucky. My cat only gets one station and it’s the “Meow, I’m hungry” frequency all day long.

Can’t listen to FAN, as long as Fatcessa is on air……
Just to hear the Mets broadcast, on WOR, is fine, then tune to non Fatcessa air time for commentary.

I don’t get it. If you want to listen to the Mets on the radio, you only have one option. And i’m not sure how the other programming on the station affects whether you want to listen to the Mets or not. Sure, it provides a little bit of hassle for those who wish to continue to listen to sports talk radio, but in the end people choose the programs the listen to rather than the stations they listen to.
Switching on the radio is akin to surfing on TV; there’s no reason to be exclusive to one particular network/channel/station.

    Dave,
That was my thinking also, but, if the contract expired there is nothing anyone can do. With WFAN broadcasting Mets games, they would be talking them up. Now, the Mets will really realize insignificance.

WFAN will still talk about the Mets, just how they talked about the Yankees when they were on WCBS. They talk about whatever news is out there on NY Sports teams.
As a hypothetical, say if Wright got involved in some PED scandal, people would probably talk about that nonstop on the WFAN.

      • David Groveman

WFAN will talk Mets but there was an effort to talk Mets because it was THEIR station and now, if the Mets are not making news they will be a distant thought behind the Yankees

I never got that impression. They talked about whatever what relevant that day, whether that be the Mets or any NY sports franchise. They hadn’t talked about them recently because they haven’t done anything news-worthy in a while.

I felt like even in dark times there were always Met stories

Unfortunately, I don’t think it was up to the Mets. WFAN offered more than double what they paid the Mets to get the Yankees, who they have wanted on their station for years. The Mets let this ‘get away’ by being a bad baseball team the last few years.

    • David Groveman

Understood. Would have still been happier if the Mets pursued a sports radio station rather than a station that kinda sounds like they might produce segments like this:

There’s only one sports talk station in town and that’s ESPN, who probably didn’t want to tie up 100+ nights a year with Mets broadcasts when there are other national sports that they want to push on their station. Also, WOR is way worse than a fake NPR as far as their regular content goes.

        • Stacker

Meant “only one other sports talk station”.

      Matthew,

WFAN, like any business, is looking to present the better product. This day would have come eventually. But, like any loss, it takes time to heal. The problem is that the Mets could have avoided this by being more diligent in keeping the quality of their product as high as possible. It can be perceived that ownership has allowed the quality to deteriorate.

Hey Dave I was wondering did WFAN dump the Mets? Or did the Mets even get a renewal offer?

  • Brian Joura

    Nah, the Mets aren’t worried.

“Sources indicated the Mets were able to obtain more than the $7 million per year they were getting in their deal with WFAN.”

That’s great news! I’ll take the extra cash in the Mets payroll (hopefully) over WFAN anyday.

  • pete

Name. Whatever extra cash goes to pay down their bills so they can re-finance their debt. I’ll wager that the New York Met payroll next season will be the same as last season.

  • JimO

This sounds so depressing. If we become relevant and the Yankees stumble at all, we’ll make those radio scoundrels pay!

    • David Groveman

It’s been said that WFAN bought high on the Yankees who were poised for a down-spell and sold low on the Mets who are finally ready for an up-swing

  • Chris F

What Mets fan in their right mind (if such a thing exists) would stay on FAN and listen to the agony that is Sterling and what’s her name. It’s a couple clicks up the dial. It’s not that big a deal. Any mets fan that doesn’t know how to find game times isn’t much a fan. Of all the ’14 problems to solve, this isn’t much to bother about.

    • David Groveman

Jeter hits it. It’s a deep fly ball… going… going… tracked down by the second baseman

  • Sean Flattery

To me it’s just a bummer. WFAN was definitely more Mets than Yankees, will be interesting to see if the change next year is noticable.

    • David Groveman

WOR should court Steve “The Schmoozer” and give him time slots prior to Met games to talk Mets.
