ryan-braun-prince-fielder-2009-6-15-22-53-39According to MetsBlog, sources close with the Brewers’ team thinking believes that Ryan Braun is more available in a trade than Norichika Aoki.

Last week, it was reported that the Brewers were one of the teams to call the Mets about 1B Ike Davis, and many thought a one-for-one swap of Aoki and Davis was very possible. Now it seems that the Brewers want to hold on to Aoki and cash-in on Braun.

The internet exploded with this news, causing people to either love or hate the idea of Ryan Braun being a New York Met.

Well the internet shouldn’t worry, as Ryan Braun won’t be wearing a Mets jersey anytime soon. A one for one swap is completely out of the question, so the Mets would have to part with more to acquire Braun. It seems as if they are more willing to move Davis as a part of a package, so the basis of a deal is there. But, what the Brewers will want in addition to Davis will be too much for Alderson to pull the trigger.

Daniel Murphy, Rafael Montero, Lucas Duda are the names of potential add ins to these types of trades along with a B prospect. The Brewers will easily ask for Noah Syndergaard in return, and Alderson has pretty much marked him as “untouchable”.

Braun could also have trouble adjusting to the New York media. With the PED stuff, he didn’t handle the Milwaukee media well. Now imagine him having those types of problems here in Flushing.

He isn’t the type of guy the Mets need in the clubhouse right now. Nor do I see any deal materializing. This rumor is exactly that a rumor. Besides internal discussions, there is no validity to the Brewers actively pursuing a trade with Braun. Every organization has internal discussions about every possible option. Most of the time, they don’t lead anywhere.

So before anyone goes crazy thinking the Mets are signing Robinson Cano and trading for Ryan Braun, a little perspective is required. Alderson is trying to show that he is serious, and this just adds to that list. Another $100 million contract is out of the question, which all but eliminates Braun and Cano from the Big Board that Alderson has in his office.

More rumors and speculation will be whispered about over the next two weeks, as the Winter Meetings are around the corner. Take it all with a grain of salt, and remember where these “reports” are coming from. Most of the time, it’s just to get eyeballs to look at an article.

Totally agree, this is a planted story.

He would be a PR nightmare, accompanied with a media circus atmosphere a la Tebow to some degree. If they’re gonna go for a big trade, I would hope they move towards a guy like Matt Kemp instead.

I agree wholeheartedly that Braun will not be able to survive the NY media so he should not be traded for Murphy or anyone else for that matter.

I agree on the bad press, but this kind of outside-the-box thinking is exactly what we need. Even off PEDs, he would out-produce our current outfield combined. I dislike Braun and would have a hard time rooting for him initially, but I’d take a shot if we don’t have to give up too much.

    Chris,
Your take is on Braun is a welcome piece of sanity in a sea of rumors and speculation. Good work!

I like it because it beats what out there now. I am going to go batshit if I see Duda, Davis, Tejada and a few more retreads in theat opening day lineup next year then read “He looked good this spring” Anyone remember Darren Reed? Greatest Spring Training ball player in history.

Im afraid to say you better get used to it. Alderson has no stomach (or $$$$) for the FA market or the people to trade for anymore. While genuine post season teams make deals like we saw yesterday, Aldersons Mets look like they puppies trying to feed off the table scraps. This team is not 1 or 2 players away from the post season; we’re a million miles away and a half dozen starting players before theres even a breath of hope. Keeps the belts buckled, more turbulence ahead.

    I guess we’re not getting Prince Fielder…..

  • Les Gomez

    ….or Profar for that matter

That kinda hurt a bit. Contract left is not that bad and Murphy and few pieces would have done it.

      • Les Gomez

I agree. Fielder is the Hernandez-Carter-Piazza-Beltran-Delgado level player that have turned things around for us in the past.

Funny part this article went up before the trade and he is in the picture with Braun.

      Or Elvis Andrus….

First off, this is bullcrap rumor. But, let me do some back of the envelope figuring here …

Strictly as a value deal … let’s assume you get the Brewers to drop $23MM on this deal. You’ve got Braun at 7/90.

He has regularly played 150 games, and last year he produced 2 WAR in 60. Let’s throw out every other production number as skewed, and use 2013 as your baseline. So his established production is actually 5 WAR.

Assume his career ends in 5 years, and you eat the last two. You are looking at 25 Wins, for $90MM and you have to add in that you are giving away free Wins in Montero, Davis or whomever.

This is actually, to me, a BAD value deal. The bad news of h defense is not like wine; it won’t get better with age.

But the most important thing about a Ryan Braun deal is this: He represents a blockade of any further deal you might want for the next 7 years, including resigning Matt Harvey & Co.

Bad for value. Bad for long term strategy. Bad for clubhouse (really? we’re going from good guys like Hawkins to guys like Braun?).

    No, no, no.
