Jose ReyesThe Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets are off to slow starts this season. The Mets main problem is their lack of a shortstop and consistent bullpen, while the Blue Jays seem to be struggling on all cylinders. Earlier this week, the Blue Jays made public the fact that they are shopping names such as Mark Beuhrle, Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, Brett Lawrie, and Jose Reyes. Reyes has not played for the Mets since 2011 when he won a batting title, but he could be coming back. The teams interested in making a trade with the Blue Jays are the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and New York Mets. So, Reyes has a 2/3 chance of returning to New York, and a 1/3 chance of rejoining the Mets. Of course, no one knows who the Blue Jays will make a deal with (if they decide to) but for now, the Mets and Yankees seem to be the two most intriguing teams in their view.

New York Mets: Imagine this: after three years of being hated by Mets fans, former shortstop Jose Reyes could make a return to the team. After all, the Blue Jays have what the Mets want and vise versa. If the Mets and Blue Jays made a trade, the Mets could send Chris Young, Ruben Tejada, Jenrry Mehjia, and Bartolo Colon to the Jays in return for Jose Reyes, Mark Beuhrle, and Edwin Encarnacion. This trade would benefit both sides, as the Mets would get a shortstop, a starting pitcher, and a legitimate first baseman in return for what seems to be scraps on their roster. So let’s be honest… would it be that bad if Reyes came back to the Mets after turning his back on the organization and its fans?

New York Yankees: Derek Jeter is one of the best shortstops ever to play the game of baseball, and he will be retiring after the 2014 season. This leaves the Yankees with a huge hole to fill in the offseason, and they seem to be against spending big money to fill important blank spots on their roster (third base and second base are two positions not filled by big money this offseason). So why try to spend money for an inconsistent player such as Hanley Ramirez this offseason, if they can easily trade for a short stop and a few other players? In this trade scenario, the Yankees would send Ichiro, Brian Roberts, and cash to the Blue Jays for Reyes (who would play as an alternate shortstop and second baseman), Beuhrle, and Lawrie in exchange. This would fill the Yankees holes at shortstop (primarily after this season), starting rotation, and third base (if they move Yangervis Solarte to second).

There is a very good chance of Reyes returning to New York, and a good chance that he may return to the Mets. Personally, I would love if Reyes returned, as it would fill a gaping hole in the Mets lineup, and would give them more speed. As for the Yankees, it would save them the trouble of signing Stephen Drew this June or Hanley Ramirez this offseason, and would provide an alternate lead off hitter in their lineup. Will Reyes come back to New York? Only time will tell. But what do you think? Should the Mets make a trade or not?

The Mets didn’t want to match the ridiculous contract he got from the Marlins. I don’t see them taking on his contract a few years later (when he’s older and even more prone to injury).

I don’t think the players involved in a trade would be a sticking point; it’s still the money.

  • Shyon

You really think we are going to get Jose Reyes and Encarnacion for that package? Also, on your 1/3, 2/3 trade likelyhood bit, thats not how probability or baseball for that matter, work.

  • DD

I think I pass. It broke my heart to see him go, but Jose isn’t the same player who played for the Mets, not nearly.

Bringing back Lee Mazilli or Rusty Staub to pinch hit at low salaries, this I get. Bringing Jose back to fill a huge need as this stage is just asking for more heartache.

  • JDC

That package isn’t really realistic. Either way, the Blue Jays or only 1/2 game out of first in the East. I’m glad you wasted my time reading this.

Dan if you’re the Blue jay GM and you make this trade I’m afraid the next trade would be the unemployment line. You can’t be serious? Are you? Young is past his prime(for that matter so is Colon). Tejada at best is a AAA player. Mehija had health issues. So how does this help Toronto? They give up their best pitcher this year for? Our rejects? Our basement shopping specials? Reyes is due 66 million for ’15 – ’17. He’s wearing down and his ability to stay healthy for a full season are in his past. As for number 2 I would see Encarnacion as a better fit but you have to give something of some value in exchange(which the Yankees don’t have).

I agree that the Jays would have to be crazy to make that deal with the Mets.

And I must not have gotten the memo about hating Reyes– here I was for the past three years having a warm spot in my heart for our first and only batting champion….

What fantasy world are you guys living in? Makes this blog unreadable!

    — The Trade is Ridiculous!!!

    — Which Met’s Fans “Hated” Jose Reyes!!!?????? He was my Favorite Met!!!!

    • Dan Kolton

That was implied after he left the Mets. I cannot think of a single Mets fan other than myself who still thinks Reyes is a respectable player and did nothing wrong.

      • Stephen

Huh? I was going to ask genuinely if this post was a joke, but based on your reply here, it’s not.
I don’t know anyone that “blames” Reyes for anything. For what? The fact that Alderson never even made an offer?
And that trade would not even fly in bizarro world.
The top pitcher and home run leader in the American League for a pine tar rag and a bucket of balls? In what world?
And if the justification was dumping salary, whey would they take on Porky’s 20 mil?
Honestly, was this a serious post?

The only legitimate thing about this is that I’m sure Reyes would do anything to get off that concrete they call a field in Toronto. It’s killing his legs just as everyone predicted it would.

  • Patrick Albanesius

I think Reyes stays where he is. Easy on the hate guys.

  • Chris F

There is a zero percent chance of Reyes being a Met. His contract is all back loaded (did you look up his future salaries…15-18 are all 22M$ each), and there is no chance Alderson is going to pay a legs guy 88M$ for ages 31-34.

  • Doug Parker

Not sure exactly what it means to be a “respectable player” but I’ll reiterate that this particular Mets fan bears Reyes no ill will. He was one of the all-time great homegrown Mets and then he made a business decision to leave.

  • John Mel

First question. Did you even bother to see how the Blue Jays are playing? In case you didn’t .5 games out of first, only AL East team with a positive run differential, they are scoring a ton of runs and great defense. The main issue they have right now is pitching which has stabilized recently but they could use at least 1 more SP.

Your trade offer is insane and makes no sense at all. I also have seen no indication any of those names have been publicly made available. You must not realize that GM Alex is the most secretive guy in the business, he makes nothing public.

Check your made up facts next time.

The mets should do whatever it takes to get Reyes back he would fill the ballpark and fans would trust Fred Wilpon again

    • Rbrahm

Yes it really is a no brainier. This team needs a lead off hitter and shortstop. Who better than the best shortstop in team history. The contract would be a problem so it probably won’t happen. A shame with the pitching someone who can produce runs like he can would be a perfect fit. No fan with even an ounce of intelligence blames him for anything. It would fill seats, promote jersey sales and maybe reinvigorate David Wright. Just do it!!!! Oh yea, can you force owners to sell? We really have been patient long enough!!!!

  • Jon

As a jay fan there has never been a hint of shopping Reyes, Beurhle, Edwin, Bautista or Lawrie. Ur crazy and you are offering nothing more than garbage. no gm would even approach Anthopolous with such an offer. This entire article is fantasy and embarrassing to read.

  • eraff

Dan must be Plugged In to The Metrix: It’s a device that turns you into a Stepford Met Fan…. You swig whatever Bilge Sandy and The Wilpons pour down your throat.

The share of fans who Loved Reyes was enormous….Still is!!!!

  • Patrick Cashman

What a ridiculous blog. Why would two Dominican players leave their heaven of playing with 5 other Dominican players, almost comprising a Dominican all star team to play for a Bernie Madoff bankrupt team. Using your trade principles, how about Esmil Rogers for Matt Harvey. The Jays will even pay Rogers’ salary this year. The Yardbarker Editor needs a kick to the nads for allowing this crap on its daily release.

  • Rich

This is one of the strangest articles I have ever read! I kept checking the date to see if it was from last year! The Jays are not having a good season!? Why would they trade their best starter, hitter, and a good positional player period? By the way, a day later the Jays are tied for first in the division, and Encarnacion is third in HR’s. Great research on this one.

  • Kev

This reminds me of those call-in sports radio theoretical trades… “What if the Mets trade Duda for Goldschmidt? What if the Mets trade Tejada and Colon for Tulowitski?” Nice try, I would love to have Reyes (circa 2006 Reyes) back, but please, try and consider the other teams’ needs… If the Blue Jays were indeed selling off their veteran players (considering they’re a half game out, that seems highly unlikely), they wouldn’t want spare parts like C Young, Tejada and Colon(I imagine this wouldn’t be that much of payroll relief, considering Young and Colon are making $); they’d want Syndergaard, Akeel Morris, Montero, deGrom, etc. By the way, Encarnacion has hit a dozen home runs this month- why in blazes would they part with Reyes and him for this wimpy package? Hey, I’d love it it it were actually viable, but this trade proposal is most cerrtainly not.

  • Gerry M.

If this ever came close to reality I would never watch another BlueJay game again!

  • 3doza33

This article is so stupid that I had to come back, read it again and leave another comment.. Who is the author off this? Is he 9 years old? Cause them it would make sense… Kind of…. If this is an adult, then he should be fired! Both trades are a complete joke and I don’t know any Mets fans that hate Reyes! You also spelled “Mejia” wrong!! We give up our bust free agents and crappy SS for their best players?? Stupid! This isn’t the first time this blog has sent out idiotic articles. I will stop reading now cause this blog had no credibility! It actually angers me that this would be allowed!

  • Rodney Atkins

I loved Jose when he was here and still love him. The didn’t even make him a half way good offer. What the Jays gave him was to much. The Mets put him in a position of take 8-10 million or leave. There was no middle ground between them and the jays.
