Alderson DePodesta and RicciardiMore than one third of the Major League Baseball Season has been played and the one thing the Mets have shown is how much the they need to improve in order to contend.  Right now, the Mets are 28-30, which is not where they want to be.  It seems that with the current roster, the possibility of a 90-win season is out of the picture… or is it?  The trade deadline is 57 days away, and the Mets can certainly do some good within that time period.  Of course, there are a few holes within the Mets’ major league roster, but they can all be fixed relatively easily.  So what will the Mets’ roster look like at the trade deadline?

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares (CF)
  2. Daniel Murphy (2B)
  3. David Wright (3B)
  4. Bobby Abreu (LF)
  5. Curtis Granderson (RF)
  6. Michael Morse (1B)
  7. Travis d’Arnaud (C)
  8. Wilmer Flores (SS)
  9. Pitcher

Bench

  1. Matt den Dekker (OF)
  2. Eric Campbell (Utility)
  3. Anthony Recker (C)
  4. Josh Satin (1B)

Notice two important things on these lists: Chris Young, Eric Young Jr., and Lucas Duda are not present.  However, Michael Morse is on the list as part of the team.  The Mets have a slight problem right now at first base.  Even though Duda is hitting homeruns…he is still Duda.  He will not hit for a high average, and will cause the Mets plenty of outs due to his lack of speed.  Therefore, sometime between now and the trade deadline, the Mets should trade Duda for Michael Morse.  Morse is off to an amazing start with the Giants, but he will probably slow down a little bit.  He is going to be a free agent at season’s end and the Giants will probably begin to fall in the standings when the Rockies take over and the Dodgers get hot, giving them the perfect reason to trade Michael Morse to the Mets (along with a few other players).

This lineup is not the best baseball has to offer, but the Mets are far from having that.  However, this lineup will supply the Mets with enough runs for their pitching to handle when the time comes to really step it up.

Starting Rotation

  1. Dillon Gee
  2. Zack Wheeler
  3. Bartolo Colon
  4. Jacob deGrom
  5. Noah Syndergaard

Bullpen

  1. Rafael Montero (LR)
  2. Scott Rice (LHS)
  3. Ron Gutierrez (MR)
  4. Carlos Torres (MR)
  5. Ian Krol (MR)
  6. Gonzalez Germen (SU)
  7. Vic Black (SU)
  8. Jeurys Familia (CP)

Jon Niese is amazing, electric, and a potential ace for any ball club.  The Tigers are in need of pitching, so there is no doubt in my mind that they will make an offer for Niese that the Mets will not be able to resist, consisting of Ian Krol, and a couple of prospects; while Ron Gutierrez will be a part of the Michael Morse trade mentioned earlier.  As for the starting rotation, it may not be the most solid rotation the Mets could have, but there is still hope. According to Sandy Alderson, Matt Harvey may rejoin the Mets in August.  Therefore, if you are a person who loves Harvey and not Bartolo Colon, the Mets may have to trade Colon at the deadline (or place him on waivers afterwards) in order to make room for Harvey.

The Mets are probably not going to win 90 games this season, but that does not mean they should give up.  By the trade deadline, the roster will probably look about the same, but there will be a few key additions and subtractions to it.  There is no guarantee that the moves mentioned above will happen, but it does seem likely that they will.  While we wait for the trade deadline to come, all we can to do is sit down, turn on the game, and hope the Mets continue their hot streak.

I almost didn’t want to comment after reading NAME’s warning above but…really? How does one qualify to write for this website? There are often very educated and well analyzed articles, but then there are articles like this. Where to begin?

The Giants will probably fall off once the Rockies take over? Have you noticed that the Giants are probably the best team in baseball – or at least 2nd best after the A’s. Yet they would obviously want to trade their first baseman who is off to an “amazing start” for Lucas Duda?

Jonathan Niese is electric? and a certified ace on just about any team?

Where is Meija in your bullpen above? Where is Dice K? Do the Mets simply release Chris Young and eat his 7.5 million dollar contract?

Or was this satire? If it was satire I apologize.

I just realized – this is the same author who thought we’d be getting Reyes back to play short. I guess that’s off the table now.

Those trades don’t make the Mets much better if any than they are now so what’s the point? The Mets would try to move Colon and Gee before moving Niese.
Duda under team control vs Morse a FA after the season doesn’t make sense either.

In reality, I don’t see the Mets making any trades for rental players because they are not going anywhere this year. I do see the Mets making possible trades for Joc Petersen or some other up and coming outfielder or shortstop.

Peterson has intrigued me. How good of a pitcher do you give up for him?

      • Chris F

The Dodger folks I listen to say that Peterson is going to force Kemp out of business. They wont be giving him up with a rotation already as strong as it is.

  • eric

So how about for a prospect like Matz plus someone like Murphy who can cover 2B and 3B and is still relatively cheap.?

  • Chris F

dee Gordon is doing great at 2B, and seems to have that under control. What it would take to land Peterson based on what we have, I really cannot imagine. I dont see the Dodgers letting him go.

#1 problem with trading Duda to Giants is a man named Belt. He is the regular 1st baseman for Giants.
#2 We finally have a closer and you discard him without so much as a player back for him.
#3 I would also move Colon before moving my only lefthander in our rotation.

    Wow.

    That was horrible.

I lost 52 IQ points by reading it.

Ridiculous, and absolutely unrealistic. I completely agree with Eric’s assessment- why would the team with the best record in the NL trade away someone who is off to an amazing start (Morse) for someone who obviously isn’t (Duda). Please, please, try and understand the other team’s position before you make up trade theories. Why on earth would the Giants make that trade?
