Hitters, RBI guy’s Remember when we had Carter with 123 rbi”s and Keith with 108 rbi’s, on the same team,in the same line-up. That’s what we need a true RBI hitter in the line-up.

I feel the same way. I remember the 1986 WS very well. We need 2 true RBI guys in the line-up. That’s what its going to take. Plus “spirit”.

Your poll supposes that those are the only possible causes, and that they act in isolation. It also supposes that the same cause is the root every time. In fact all of those are in play, and some days its more one than another; some days, in fact most, its a mixture of everything. Of course, bad clutch hitting seems to be missing on your list.

Bad Manager is the logical conclusion.
Bad Bullpen no longer fits with three reliable back end pitchers in Mejia-Familia-Torres. There is also three other relievers in Germen- Black-Edgin that could with proper development take a back end spot. The manager keeps sending out Rice for a LOOGY matchup and he has the worst stats of the group. Dice K fit the roll of long man nicely. Why he starts is a managers decision. Mejia moved to the bullpen a month ago and the manager has not established consistent roles except for Rice.
Bad Talent is something at first glance that might be considered. Offensively, the weakest link is catcher and let’s face it that could go under bad luck because the center piece of the Dickey trade hasn’t cut it yet. SS has been a problem but Tejada has the 10th best OPS among the 15 NL shortstops so it is a common problem for 2/3 the managers within the league. It is the managers decision to play Tejada over Flores and that is confusing since Flores is young and needs AB’s and was brought up to replace Tejada who was perceived as not getting the job done. Left field is the other weak link and the manager had been favoring the Youngs as the solution. Abreu is a stronger OF choice with the occasional rest by Campbell and that should strengthen that weakness. Again, it is the manager’s choice. The other offensive players are adequate major leaguers with OPS+ above 100 (granted it would be nice if some could be improving to their career average).
The starting pitching, although not as strong as initially believed, still puts a competitive starter out there every day. So I conclude that there is talent, not great talent, on this team but it is being utilized incorrectly.
Bad luck. All teams have injuries. Luck doesn’t appear to have anything to do with this.
Four wins and the record is 12-13, or 32-31 or 1 game out of first place.
I conclude that bad managerial decisions are the reason this has not been achieved.

When you get rid of the worst owners in baseball ( the Wilpons ) then clean house period . You will see a big difference. the true Met fans will and should boycott the games, and force them to sell, that’s the only way we will see a competitive team on the field, and what Met fans truly deserve. What a mess they made of a once good team. angelo

Owners and the GM are a big problem it’s the puppet and puppeteer show, as for the manager and coaches it’s time for a change. Why do players in AAA do good and fail when they come up? why send players down to AAA to get problems solved and then fail when they come up. It’s very clear TC and crew are the problem, it’s not worth the time and money to see the Mets play. It’s more fun watching college baseball and softball

The Wilpon group is the start and the center of the problem. Until they are removed, the head of the snake will remain.

No clutch hitting automatic outs cliff young Travis D anoud Ruben Tehada Ike Davis Curtis granderson only 3 hitters Murphy wright Lagares.

Biggest problem is none of the above. Biggest problem is that the entire team cannot hit with RISP. Time and time again, 1st & third no out, Bases loaded no out and they cant get the ball out of the infield. This includes David Wright. He has not been the same since he got hit in the head.

Wright was hit in the head in August of 2009. Here are his OPS totals with RISP:

      2007 – .976
      2008 – .703
      2009 – .827
      2010 – .836
      2011 – .765
      2012 – .940
      2013 – .775
      2014 – .657

His numbers are lousy this year but it’s not like it’s the continuation of some pattern since he was beaned. He’s been all over the map, both before and after Cain hit him. That’s just the nature of the beast with RISP.

      Mike,

When Gil Hodges, Davey Johnson, Bobby Valentine, and Willie Randolph ran this team, the one common ground of all of them was the team never quit and found a way to win. Have you seen the record of the Mets without these managers at the helm? Jeff Torborg, Art Howe, Dallas Green, and now Terry Collins? They are losers! The team takes on the identity of those losers. The mets would have been better off keeping Randolph for the long term…at least the record in 1 or 2 run games was respectable. This team is made up of quitters (down after the 7th inning) and chokers (up after the 7th inning). The talent is there or they would be blown out every night, which they are not. Did you see that in the 9 games the Mets and Braves played so far, 7 of them were 2run differential or less? That means the Mets are in these games but they do not have the extra umph to pull through. That’s why I think Wally Backman should take over next season. He has the Davey Johnson attitude and the Valentine fire! He will give these Mets 94 wins in 2015 and we will be back in the race to win the East!

Perusing the standings today, I thought it would be interesting to note, we don’t need to look back far to find the Astros…oops, I meant to say they don’t need to look far back to find the Mets. Not even mid June and the Astros have caught the Mets and are rising, while the “Metanic” (credit due to pete who coined that gem) continues to slip into Davey Jones’ Locker.

“This is Teflon Terry the Captain of the Metanic, SOS, SOS”
Jeff Wilpon: “What is the problem, are you out of rations ?”
Terry: ” No, no matter how bad it gets we have Rice everday. We are rudderless and we are adrift”.
Jeff: ” well, then hoist the sales (pun intended) because I don’t want to pay for fuel”
Terry: “no dummy, SOS, SOS, …Spend Or Sell ! “

      • Chris F

        Priceless Metsense!

It’s been 2 months since we trade Davis away, and Duda is still batting 6th behind Chris Young. Can someone tell TC that the benefit of having Duda in front of Chris Young (and he should really be in front of granny too) is greater than going LRL, especially when the guy breaking up the 2 lefties has just a .525 OPS against lefties.

Just one of the many reasons why TC breeds failures.

I love it when they blame it on the manager. yes, the main cause of every bad team is a bad manager, and you will notice over the course of baseball all those glaring examples. What a croc of crap. The cause of this bad team is bad sports writing. Articles as dumb as this one carry over to the field and cause the errors poor hitting etc…..In this wave of stupidity, posters who formerly had what’s known as common sense now after reading this BS become dumbfounded and post the most idiotic remarks imaginable. Caution to those who post without thinking, you sound and look like a moron, and if you sound like one and look like one, well, you are one.

  • Eddie Hines

Here is some good news….The last time the Braves won a playoff series was 2001…The last time the Mets won a playoff series is 2006! Tell that to a Braves fan when they say their team is better than ours! (And the Mets last won a WS game in 2000…The braves last won a WS game in 1996!)

    • Chris F

you know Eddie, that somehow does feel good today. Thanks for that!
