AvengersThe Mets are the number one team in the National League East, while Avengers: Age of Ultron is the number one movie in America. But if you think that is where the similarities stop between the team and the movie…you have a lot to learn. Not only do the Mets have two players, David Wright and Noah Syndergaard, who have nicknames relevant to the characters in the film, but the other characters also have their Life Model Decoys as well. Of course, putting all things into consideration for each character, gender does not play a roll in the comparisons. Therefore, here are the 2015 New York Met Avengers!

Captain America – Dubbed Captain America due to his phenomenal roll in the World Baseball Classic throughout his career, David Wright truly fits both the name and responsibility that comes from being Captain America. Just the mere title of Captain links these two together, because Wright is the captain of the Mets while Captain America is the captain of…well…America! Controlling the game in the field is not an easy thing to do, but both these men are able to do it, and do it well.

Iron Man – Tony Stark’s Iron Man is an outspoken member of a team of superheroes. It is hard to ague that Matt Harvey is not the equivalent to Iron Man. To further the comparison, Iron Man has quite the arsenal of weapons and new technology, while Harvey has a large arsenal of pitches and ways to get batters out. It takes a true man to be the face of the operation both on and off the field, and Iron Man and Harvey are truly up for the challenge.

Hulk – The soft-spoken, yet extremely powerful Hulk is no doubt equivalent to Lucas Duda of the Mets. Duda was dubbed The Hulk last season, but the nickname never truly took off. However, the nickname does make a lot of sense. Duda hit 30 home runs last season, and all of it was due to his super-human strength. Although Duda has struggled to maintain his 30-homer power so far this season, it is just a matter of time before he gets angry…and other teams will not like it when he’s angry.

Thor – Noah Syndergaard came from Toronto in a trade to help the Mets become a better team, much like Thor came from Asgard to help the Earth become a better place. Last night, the mighty Thor made his first start in the majors, and although he struggled early with his control, he proved that he will be a force to be reckoned with. This 6’6” 240 lbs. pitcher truly is worthy of the power of Thor, and should be a member of the team helping destroy the enemy for a long, long time.

Hawkeye – With precision, accuracy, and a plethora of weapons, Hawkeye can be mostly compared to Jacob deGrom and his precision, accuracy, and plethora of pitches. Both married men have become fan favorites recently, and have had their rise to superstardom within the past couple of years. But perhaps the most important similarity: both Hawkeye and deGrom have proven that they are needed in order for their respective teams to succeed.

Black Widow – Black Widow is underrated, good looking, and has been through it all…ring a bell? That’s right…Bartolo Colon! Trained to strike out batters in Cleveland back in 1997, Colon is much like Black Widow, because she was trained by the Soviets to…well…never mind…this comparison is over…

Scarlet Witch – While Scarlet Witch uses witchcraft in order to prevent evil from spreading and destroying the world, Juan Lagares uses witchcraft to prevent runs from scoring and fly balls from falling. These two are newer acquisitions to their respective teams and have a little bit more to learn in order to establish themselves as true threats. However, they are both surrounded by veterans who they amaze with their superhuman abilities. Give it a few more years, and both Scarlet Witch and Lagares may just be the strongest, most valuable players on their teams.

Odds are, if you are going to see a movie within the next few weeks, you will probably be seeing Avengers: Age of Ultron, and if you go to see a ballgame, you will probably be going to see the Mets. Both teams have their share of superstars and a great leader/mind behind the operation (Terry Collins/Sandy Alderson for the Mets and Nick Fury/Jarvis for the Avengers).

I’ve got to say, i’m pretty tired of these superhero nicknames.

I vow never to use them again.

I don’t think the Mets are great with nicknames. Have they ever been?

Wow. I feel dumber now. After the recent lack of success, an article like this is just… Not good.
