The D’Backs took the second game of the four-game series with a 7-2 win Friday night in Arizona.

It was a disheartening game after Thursday’s big win.

  • Jon Niese had his best outing in awhile, piled up a bunch of strikeouts and generally pitched just bad enough to lose. But, it beats the shellackings he had been taking lately.
  • Michael Cuddyer hit a home run. He also made an awesome throw to the plate, just missing an outfield assist.
  • The Mets’ other run scored when Wilmer Flores, Juan Lagares and Eric Campbell strung together hits. What are the odds that all three of those guys would get a hit in the same inning? I bet it doesn’t happen again all season.
  • It was disappointing that John Mayberry didn’t start after his big day yesterday.

I don’t agree that Mayberry should have started yesterday’s game against the righty Hellickson. Who should he have been in for Duda, Grandy, Lagares, or Cuddyer? Cuddyer might be the logical choice but he is heating up and had a HR in the game.
If there’s one thing we know about Mayberry it’s that he only has use vs lefties. Whenever he’s been used versus righties in the past he has failed. We can’t go crazy over one good game especially when he got that start against the lefty Robbie Ray.

If the Mets played Cuddyer at 3B then Mayberry could have started. If the Mets put Cuddyer temporarily at 3B during Murphy’s absence then they might be able to trade for an easier to obtain outfielder that could help the offense.
Lagares is playing hurt and can’t throw which will effect his defensive metrics. It reminds me of Wright unable to swing with power because of his shoulder. Partial players.
As Gus mentioned in the Chatter, why pitch to Goldshmidt with a runner on second and an open base?
Three days in and the six man rotation is abandoned ? Personally I would sort of keep with it by moving Gee to the bullpen and sliding him into start for a starter who needs a skip in the rotation because of inning limits. It just doesn’t make sense with the off day to have your better pitchers wait a week to pitch. It should be an advantage to have 6 starting pitchers, not a disadvantage.
Decent starting pitching and weak offense is the theme of 2015.
