Tonight we saw former Met and Cy Young recipient R.A. Dickey take the mound against Bartolo Colon. Ever since Dickey was traded, he has not been able to duplicate his 2012 award-winning campaign. It was nice (and sometimes painful) to see Dickey pitch against the Mets, however it was unfortunate that the Mets could not muster up offense against him, as the team got three hits off of him in seven innings. The Blue Jays would go on to win this game 7 to 1.

  • Colon had the chance to win his 10th game of the season tonight, but struggled with command throughout the game. If Bartolo cannot locate his fastball with pinpoint accuracy, hitters are teeing off, and the Blue Jays took advantage tonight.
  • Dickey performed nicely and kept the Mets off-balance by using his fast knuckleball, slow knuckleball and mixing in his fastball. It was amazing to see how much his knuckleball danced, as it fooled Russell Martin sometimes, which lead to some missed calls from the home plate umpire. Especially in the at-bat to Ruben Tejada, the knuckleball was right down the pipe, but Martin could not handle it, leading to Tejada walking.
  • The Mets offense struggled again, as Lucas Duda, Wilmer Flores and Juan Lagares were the only Mets with hits. Duda homered, which was the only run for the Mets.
  • Logan Verrett pitched nicely in relief, going two innings and striking out four. Hopefully the Mets found someone they can trust in a close game.

Tonight was all about Dickey dominating the Mets. It would have been nice to see Travis d’Arnaud get a hit off the right-hander, but that did not happen. Jacob deGrom will pitch for the Mets tomorrow night against the Atlanta Braves.

I don’t know how Wilmer Flores did not make it into your notes tonight as single handledly gave the Jays an extra inning today.

First play was the ball the Pillar hit right towards him, and he over jumped while taking his eye off the ball, causing him to completely miss it as it deflected into LF. First gift out.

Second one was the takeout slide on a double play attempt, where he actually was taken out on because he has no ability to jump. I mean, really, how often does a takeout slide work? 1% of the time if that? Second gift out.

Final one was the single that Jose Bautista hit hard, but really wasn’t that far away from Flores and shows that he has absolutely no range.

    Third gift out.

He basically gave them two 4th innings.

And 5 runs as a direct result.

Well, no. It was as an indirect result since Wilmer wasn’t pitching. Bartolo could have still pitched out of it. That said, I don’t want to make excuses for Wilmer and it may very well turn out that he’s not the long term SS. However, 1 run in 18 inning isn’t going to get it done however you want to look at it.

No doubt because several years had passed since the trade but still – I was surprised about how easy it was to see Dickey pitch for another team against the Mets. I hope this start catapults him back to being the guy he was for us.

For one night RA made us wish we never traded him. Tomorrow, June 20th, when we wake up with TdA catching, Noah in the rotation, Becerra hitting home runs in Savannah and the Mets in first place, we will realize it was all worth it. Tip of the hat to one of my favorite players who pitched a great game.
Logan Verrett pitched well but the Mets have the 4th best ERA relief corp so I already think that there are a few others before him that “they can trust in a close game”.
Tough night for Flores. Bring on the Braves!

    Didn’t see the game, but…
    1. Wasn’t surprised at the outcome. I keep saying that we should trade Colon ASAP mostly because at 42, we are more apt to get injured, like pulled muscles. So, running the bases, swinging too hard, sliding into a base: DL, there goes the value. Ticking time bomb. I think he is what he is as a pitcher, this game notwithstanding. I disagree with James that Familia still needs him. He did last year, but now he needs to swim in the deep waters alone.

    2. We knew Flores may hurt the defense from time to time, but the hope was that the offense would benefit more than the defense suffers. I’m good with including him in a trade now that some teams have seen that he can hit for power. Question is, if he goes to, say the Brewers in a trade for Segura, and we watch him play a SS like he’s playing now, but hit 25 bombs a year for the next five while averaging .275, how many Mets fans will want to hang Sandy? Don’t forget that for a month or so, Flores has actually looked pretty good at times, before going to play in the only stadium with carpet.

    3. Can’t understand why Alderson even mentioned Wright may be back by the all-star break. Every time that they have a bad night, are we going to look over our shoulder to see if Wright is close?

    4. I always hated knuckleballers. Some mangers rest their stars against knuckleballers to not screw them up and put them in a slump for two weeks. Better to lose one, than to lose an extra three.

There’s always the nagging fear of a Met fan with someone like Flores.Remember Jeff Kent ?
