It looked like it was going to be a low-scoring game until the top of the ninth inning as the Mets pulled away, and scored four runs. Although it took a while, it is always a good night when the Mets offense can put together a couple of runs in an inning

  • Jacob deGrom continues his wonderful season, as he went six innings, struck out eight and let up two runs. He kept the Nationals offense quiet throughout the game, as he only allowed three hits with no walks.
  • How about the 7-8-9 innings belonging to Jenrry Mejia, Bobby Parnell and Jeurys Familia? Quite a dominant trio towards the back of the bullpen.
  • Wilmer Flores had a great day at the plate, as he went 2-4 with an intentional walk, two RBIs, and a run. He also made a nice tag on Ian Desmond, as Kevin Plawecki threw out the Nationals shortstop trying to steal second base.
  • Eric Campbell came up clutch with a two-run single that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Nice to see a pinch hitter come through for the Mets, as the bench has not been a plus for this team.
  • Michael Cuddyer did not start this game, but drew a walk and scored a run off the bench. It will be interesting to see what happens with Cuddyer moving forward, as he continues to play through his injury.
  • The Mets scored three runs in the ninth against Tanner Roark, as Curtis Granderson had an RBI single, and Daniel Murphy drove in two with a base hit. Flores would drive in the fourth run in the ninth with an RBI groundout.

Overall, this was a great win. The Mets bullpen showed that a pitcher can go six innings and have faith in what lies behind them. Obviously Familia did not look great, but he simply did not have the same adrenaline as a save would give him.

For once, Terry Collins’ move paid off. Campbell delivered and all is well in the Mets universe-for now.

The Mets have a real shot to take the series and only sit one game behind the Nationals.

Tomorrow we can make up ground.
Tough call to remove a hitting pitcher like JDG with one out and the tieing run on third. JDG had only threw 82 pitches. If they only tied on Campbells hit then what do you do? Glad it all worked out. Familia pitching the ninth was ludicrous especially with a 12:30 start time tomorrow and no off days until Monday with the Dodgers coming into town. Hey, maybe it will all work out. Tejada had a key ninth inning RBI single in the ninth that wasn’t mentioned. Very uplifting win and nice to see some hits with RISP.

Granderson had an rbi, Tejada had an rbi, Murphy had an rbi, and wilmer flores had an rbi with a fielders choice ground out in the 9th inning.

    This crazy team.

I wonder if we’re all not used to this, the ups and downs of a pennant chase. It’s like the air is thin up air, it’s hard to breathe.

Anyway, glimmers of hope. Because in this crazy WC inflated world of MLB 2015, everybody is in it and you don’t have to be great to make a run at a championship. Why not the Mets?

I am encouraged in the belief that SA will make a trade and, I hope, bring up Conforto. Add two bats to this club and let’s hope for the best. This is not a lot to ask for, essentially: one stinking trade. I think it will happen. Adding Zobrist feels like it tandems best with Conforto; adding Parra to that mix allows the Mets to sit Lagares, which I think Sandy would really, really love to do.

The cost of trading for both Zobrist and Parra might be very steep. I think a lot depends upon the true health of Cuddyer and Lagares.

And of course, as I’ve said since March, the cost of bringing up Conforto is nothing. On a team that can’t hit, you must call up the best hitter in your organization.

Agreed that Conforto should repair to Flushing immediately.

One bit of sympathy for the devil: just as was the case last Winter, those teams looking to add offense are looking at a near-empty cupboard; every option was mediocre, overpriced or both. I was far from thrilled with the Cuddyer signing back then, but grateful that the Mets didn’t overpay even more for one of the other available specimens.

Zobrist is going to cost somebody too much. He has long been a favorite of mine, so I won’t complain too much if the Mets acquire him. But the Mets could trade for Zobrist, promote Conforto and have him hit .275/.340/.425, and it still wouldn’t be enough unless some guys start producing.

The best things that could happen for the Mets would be that d’Arnaud comes back swinging, and that Duda rediscovers his stroke. Then they’d have something to build upon.

BTW, Theo Epstein not afraid to call up Kyle Schwarber.

    • Jake Jones

To be fair Schwarber had a little more success than Conforto. he also has played above AA including the majors. Im not against promoting Conforto but for godsakes he hasn’t even been in AA that long. People seem to not understand that it is a huge jump from AA to the pros. lets be honest our fanbase is so anal if Conforto comes up and doesn’t perform they will be calling for his head. Id rather not screw up the kid by putting all that pressure on him

Schwarber was in the same draft class as Conforto, and is the same age. He played a total of 17 games in AAA. He hit .320 in AA, but with better OBP and SLG than Conforto.

One other important difference between the two:

Yesterday Schwarber helped the Cubs win a game.

Conforto has not yet been given that opportunity.
