Our long national nightmare is over as the Mets broke a two-game losing streak with a 5-4 nail-biting win over the Red Sox Sunday afternoon.

  • Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth with a one-run lead and promptly gave up two hits. But he earned his 35th save of the season, with two strikeouts bookending a fielder’s choice.
  • Tyler Clippard played a big role, pitching out of a jam in the seventh and then hurling a scoreless eighth. For his efforts he earned the win.
  • Michael Cuddyer might have worn goat horns in the game, for not coming close to fielding a bloop hit that led to the tying run scoring in the seventh. But in the bottom of the inning, he delivered his third hit of the game, an RBI single.
  • Juan Uribe contributed a booming two-run double to straight away center field.
  • Mets hope to start a new winning streak with the Phillies arriving in Citi Field for a three-game set, starting Monday.

    No fingernails left.

The 7th inning has been a problem for the Met bullpen. TC keeps going to Robles in that inning even though Gilmartin (80%) and Torres (75%) have better success rates in not allowing an earned run in an appearance. Robles was at 70%. Robles failed and gave up the tieing run and TC brought in Clippard. If TC was thinking of using Clippard in the seventh then he should have brought him in right away. Robles should not have been an option. As usual, things worked out and Clippard also threw a perfect 8th, the Mets scored and Familia hung on for the save. Teflon Terry wins again. Hopefully Reed fills the 7th inning void and TC uses him properly. Robles has a nice arm but he should now be relegated to the back end of the bullpen behind Gilmartin, Torres and Verritt.
The Mets are still 5 1/2 up with the Phillies coming to town. LGM

That number is probably worse than 70% because it probably doesn’t include all the inherited runners he allows to score, such as today. His strand rate is about 50%, which is really bad for a relief pitcher.

I’m so disgusted that Oh No is still on this roster…

    • Chris F

Yeah, I cnt believe it either. He cant be used, and taking up a roster spot. Why?

  • Steevy

    What,they are keeping Oh No!?

    • TexasGusCC

Sandy is not going to release a player he just traded for last week and look foolish. Can’t expect that and quite honestly, would be disgraceful.

      • Chris F

Gus, you also can’t use him unless we have a 10 run lead. He’s not going to post season and he’s holding down a 40 man spot that my cat could do better with as a pinch runner.

        • TexasGusCC

Chris, in two days the bullpen will have more pitchers than there are innings and then more will come in mid September when Vegas wins their championship. I wouldn’t want my GM to look like a fool, so let it go and bury him in two days as tenth best. As far as the 40 man is concerned, he’s a free agent this year. Good riddance.

Seems like very few relievers cleared waivers so what do you want the guy to do? In the article by Brian this morning, I wrote my take on why Alderson feels compelled to keep bringing in LOOGYs even though in March he stated that he doesn’t believe in them. It isn’t his belief that is being fulfilled.

            1. Sandy already is a fool, and everyone already knows it.
            2. Every day he continues to employ that piece of garbage makes him look like a bigger and bigger fool.

“what do you want the guy to do?”

            Resign.

People, baseball people yet, will do the best thing to ensure their own survival on occasion. Once upon a time the Texas Rangers started a season with a new manager, Eddie Stanky. One game was enough to cause a re-think, and Stanky was gone. One Game! People refer to Vern Rapp as the quintessential Bad Hire, but even he was given a full season plus nineteen more games to implode. So rational thought can intrude, even when the old Previous Investment trap looms.

If the object is to win ball games, there really is no known universe where Eric O Flaherty belongs on the roster, but Logan Verrett does not.

        • James Preller

This is simple. They want Verrett to get another spot start in 10 days, so this will get him a start down in AAA so he’s ready for that role.

SA traded for O’Flaherty. Every decision they have made this year is to avoid losing players unnecessarily. They might cast off O’Flaherty — these guys are seeing the same things we all are — but they will do it on their terms.

I know, I know. He has failed the audition spectacularly. But they are so intent on finding a one-out guy, and they still remember his effective work in Atlanta, they are not ready to give up entirely. They think he might still get them some big outs in September and didn’t want to give him away for nothing.

It is consistent with the logic they have used all season long.

          • DED

Yeah, well, it means no postseason for Verrett, probably; and that means the Mets won’t be fielding their best possible roster should they make the playoffs.

The team has sacrificed a lot to get to the postseason this time. That being the case, I would really, really like for them to do something when/if they get there. I already know that my next couple of seasons will consist of, looking for promise among a vastly depleted minor league system — looking for corn in the crap pile, I believe the expression was. I don’t want the cost paid to have been paid in vain.

  • Chris B

Familia adding a splitter to his repitoire is just nasty.

  • Steevy

Oh btw,Lagares should never bat near the top of the order.

    • James Preller

I’m not sure I’d bat him at the top either.

Awful couple of games for Juan, think he went 0-10, but before that his OPS vs. LHP was above .800. He’s actually been brilliant since going to a platoon role (until Boston rolled into town).

I hate the way he just seems to throw away at-bats.

Even so, a manager can’t over-react to every bad game or two.
