The story of this frustrating, infuriating game, as told by me on Twitter (@CharlieHangley):

Just before the first pitch from Bartolo Colon:

Let’s goooooooooo Bartolooooooo

Update from our Nation’s Capital in the first inning:

Baltimore 2 Washington nil…

Bottom of the first, Daniel Murphy up with two outs:

MURPH! Long blast! 1-0

Bottom of the second:

Wow! [Lucas] Duda hits it into the shift, clanks off [Hector] Olivera’s glove and hustles into 2nd. Very nice

[Ruben] Tejada picks up [Michael] Conforto with a hot single! 2-0.

After the top of the third:

Colon perfect through 3. Hey, you don’t think…?

I have an unhealthy attachment to the Ringo commercial…

In the fourth:

Cameron Maybin looks like Lastings Milledge.

After Jace Peterson’s infield single with two out in the fifth, ending Colon’s shot at history:

Crappy hit. BOO!

After the Mets “hit” in the fifth:

…aaaaaaaaand it’s time for the #Mets nightly offensive tank job.

Top of the seventh:

Back to back Brave singles to start the 7th. Gotta get 2.

Single for Maybin loads ’em up. Bartolo out, Addison Reed in.

[Michael] Bourn lines a base hit to make it 2-1.

[Freddie] Freeman cracks one off the RF wall pinch hitting. Didn’t miss a grand slam by much. 3-2 Braves. And you can hear the shouts from DC.

Mets rally in the bottom half, Eric Young, Jr. on second, David Wright up:

Captain!

Maybin robs Yoenis Cespedes of an extra base hit in bottom of the eighth:

Open your eyes now Maybin, you bum!

Jeurys Familia in the ninth, game tied 3-3:

Oh boy. 2 on, Freeman up. Really uncomfortable here.

And after Freeman’s three-run homer:

***dammit!

Freddie “Chipper Burrell” Freeman

—————————————————————————–

Meanwhile, the Orioles rallied to beat the Nationals 4-3, so for all our frustration, the magic number went down again. We’re at five.

    Double puke

  • Matty Mets

Didn’t we used to have a good bullpen? And a great rotation? And a high powered offense? Does any other team in MLB turn it on and off collectively like we do? Team wide hot streaks and slumps.

Remember we are in first place, 6 1/2 games in front with a Magic # 5.
Frustration is being a Nationals fan. They were supposed to win and can’t even take advantage of a team that stumbled.
Backing into the Division is better than the last six Septembers in Met history.
Last night the bullpen had a meltdown. If it had to happen it is better that Reed and Familia got their bad performance out of the way on the same night. The good sign in the night was Wright getting another clutch hit to tie it.
Four games in Cincy with their best four starters should vault them to a clinching by Sunday or in Philadelphia next week.

That the Mets can clinch the division is a given at this point. That the Mets may get taken out in three games by Kershaw, Grenkie, and company seems much more possible than it was beginning of September. The good news is that there is a week and a half to get out of it.

I think each comment above is absolutely correctly. That was a terrible game, but we are backing into the playoffs. That’s better than not being there, but it’s not going to get us past the Dodgers.

    Very frustrating.

Its my fault. I walked in the door with Colon being perfect…as soon as I sat down, he gave up his first hit and the wheels commenced falling off.

Thank goodness for Baltimore’s stellar assistance.

Thanks for owning up to it JIMO. We needed a person to blame!!

        LOL, there’s our sacrifice!
