Call me crazy, but I always like to a see a team entering the postseason on a hot streak, not losing their last four games. The Mets had only five hits today, and managed only one run, as Noah Syndergaard was absolutely brilliant. He struck out 10, walked one, and the only blemish on his day was a solo home run by Clint Robinson.

The offense looked terrible on the other hand, as they struck out 13 times with Travis d’Arnaud and David Wright both doing so three times. Over his last 15 games, d’Arnaud is now hitting .163/.226/.224, while Yoenis Cespedes is hitting .208/.283/.358 over the same period. The offense could easily explode and demolish the Nationals in game two, but they could continue to stink and worry us.

Let’s see what happens in a couple hours.

What’s the point of clinching early then?

While the official clinch was a week ago, the unofficial clinch was over 3 weeks ago during the sweep of the Braves series. At that point, these games became even more meaningless than Spring Training games.

I was at this game, sitting right next to the rightfield fair pole. I got a pregame salute from Michael Cuddyer.

Old friend Matt denDekker robbed Daniel Murphy of at least 2 RBI with a running grab in deep right center.

Syndergaard completely outpitched Gio, but one mistake cost him.
