1978: New York Mets sold Butch Metzger to the Philadelphia Phillies.
1985: In a marathon game that borders on the surreal, the Mets endure two rain delays and six hours and ten minutes of playing time to beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings. Relief pitcher Rick Camp, an .060 career hitter, homers in the 18th inning to tie the game no pitcher has ever homered that late in a game. Keith Hernandez hits for the cycle in a game that ends at 3:55 a.m. on July 5, the latest finish in Major League history. At 4:01 a.m., the post-game fireworks display begins, causing some local residents to think the city is under attack.
2010: David Wright and Jose Reyes were named to the 2010 National League All-Star team. Wright was selected for the fifth straight season, while Reyes picked up his third All-Star team nod. The controversy was why Mike Pelfrey, a 10-game winner in the first half of the season did not get selected. Pelfrey told the media he was not upset by the decision. “I’m not angry at all. Leading up to it I thought it was kind of going to be a tough decision anyway. It was going to be pretty hard because a lot of guys were having good years. But it gives me a chance to go home to Wichita and see my house, which I miss a lot.”
2010: The New York Mets score eight runs in the first four innings on their way to a 9-5 win over the Washington Nationals. David Wright had two hits in the game, giving his 10 multi-hit games in his last 13 starts. Jason Bay tripled and added four RBI in the Mets win.
