Both backup infielders for the New York Mets have shed their walking boots.

Flores is currently working out at the Mike Barwis fitness and conditioning program at the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and is scheduled to begin hitting this week.

Tejada has been working out in his native Panama. He may report to Port St. Lucie as early as Feb. 1 — more than three weeks before the official position-player report date on Feb. 24.

It certainly seems like both are progressing either on or ahead of schedule.

Excellent news. I still don’t know about Wilmer being a back up first baseman though.

  • Eraff

Why would you hesitate with Wilmer at 1st?

    • Brian Joura

Because he’s not played a game there in the majors (only 20 in the minors) and as Mike Piazza proved, not everyone can play 1B.

      • Eraff

With some Prep, Piazza may have been able to play there– certainly Flores has Glove and Hand Skills that correclate very well to Success there. My assumption is that he’s a good bet to play Adequately. That’s at least as well as Duda!(anticipating Defensive Stats that argue that Duda is a “fine” First Baseman….silly).

        • Brian Joura

Duda has good footwork around the bag, which we got to see a ton because of all of the rotten throws from Flores, and he’s strong in scooping balls out of the dirt, again, we’ve seen him do this a lot. And he’s gotten better at going after foul pops.

If you think Flores would be in the same ballpark defensively as Duda in 2016, I’d say you’re really mistaken.

          • Eraff

You believe Duda is the 2nd Coming of Wes Parker…you’re Delirious! 🙂

Interesting that you “defend” Duda by pointing out “Rotten Throws” from Flores…a Guy you’ve Defended as a Short Stop.

            Strange.

You need to stop putting words in my mouth.

I’m excited to have Flores in a super sub role. i think he’s going to be great.

This is Wilmer Flores’ highlight film for 2015. Can someone please find and paste the Ruben Tejada one?

    • Chris F

Sure, until Utley assaulted him, he was the post season SS.
