baby-frustratedIf the Mets are going to crap the bed, does it have to be vs. the Phillies and Marlins? The Mets are now 2-4 and looking listless.

Tonight is a game best left forgotten. Steven Matz got the first two batters of the game out in neat and efficient fashion. The third hitter, Christian Yelich, was given an infield hit on a challeneged call. This seemed to throw Matz off, despite his strikeout of Giancarlo Stanton. In the second, Matz surrendered two walks, two hit and two runs before recording an out, a sacrifice bunt by Marlins pitcher Jarrad Cosart. A few more hits and a Stanton bomb of a homerun later, the Mets trailed 7-0. Matz’s line: an inning and two-thirds, six hits, two walks, one strikeout and an ERA of 37.79. Needless to say, the bullpen — short a man to begin with, seeing as Logan Verrett will be starting on Wednesday in Jacob deGrom’s spot — is now in tatters.

The Mets tried to mount a couple of comebacks, plating their three runs in the fourth, but it was a futile struggle. A couple of positive takeaways: Yoenis Cespedes had a couple of hits and scalded the ball every time up. David Wright also had some well struck balls, including the final out, a bullet into the glove of Miami shortstop Adeiny Hecchavaria.

Nothing to do but lace ’em up and get ’em tomorrow.

    Panic City here we come.

No Panic City just yet Chris, but I was a bit annoyed with Steven Matz before the game started. He spoke of his bullpen work as being some of his best. Why would he have to mention that? It seemed to me like he was trying to calm the fans after a loss, but who is he to do that? The only time we hear how well a starter threw their bullpen session is if he was hurt, clobbered and trying to sound confident, or bullshitting the fans. I didn’t see the first and he hasn’t pitched yet, so I gathered the third and hope it wasn’t the second. I would like the Mets to stop talking confidence and let their game speak for itself.

Complaining about the umps/refs is a loser’s lament but I believe it needs to be mentioned as playing a part in Matz’ meltdown.

He was getting substantially squeezed in that fateful second inning, yes.

    No panic city here!
The Mets lineup has eight professional hitters with experienced hitters on the bench. The Mets will start hitting soon. I just hope it is before the hungry Nats build an insurmountable lead.
The general feeling in spring training that they were going to the World Series again without playing the season was more concerning.

I knew going in that this offense would he inconsistent – no speed, no great high average contact hitter. I also had a feeling some of the pitchers would be slow out of the gate with the crappy weather and weird schedule. And we all know the “Marlins always give the Mets fits” as Francesa says. I just didn’t imagine all of this would culminate into losing a series at home to the Phillies and getting off to a 2-4 start. I’m excited to see Thor on the hill tonight but will the Mets be able to scratch out a run or two against Fernandez?

    • Chris F

I wonder of the Mets will scratch out a hit or two let alone a run or two. We could easily predict the Mets being no hit tonight. I think the optimum prediction was 25-5 for the first 30 if I recall. I think a few over 500 would be more realistic. Like Metsense says, the winning better commence soon, or the Nats will have an insurmountable lead before May.

  • TexasGusCC

Maybe I’m naive, but I cannot see any lead in May being insurmountable. However, it seems to me that the Mets spent all winter celebrating their 2016 World Series win. Time to face reality boys, or the other teams will throw your lunch in the garbage.
