The Mets hit four homers and finally beat the Padres, 6-4, Saturday night. But there’s only one thing that people will remember about this game.

  • Bartolo Colon hit a homer.
  • Yep, you read that right, Colon homered. Sure, Yoenis Cespedes hit one in the upper deck and David Wright and Michael Conforto went back-to-back in the 9th inning. But those take a clear back seat to Colon, who became the oldest MLB hitter to hit his first homer, a two-run shot to LF.
  • Colon had a pretty good night on the mound, too. He made one bad pitch to John Jay, who hit a three-run homer. But Colon kept his pitch count low and would have gone longer except that Terry Collins had a chance to use Jerry Blevins against the lefty Jay and he took it. And for the second straight night, Blevins set down Jay with a strikeout.
  • Wright was perfect, going 2-for-2 with three walks. He also added a SB. Kevin Plawecki had a good night, with two extra-base hits and a walk.
  • Jeurys Familia came on in the 9th to earn his first save in May.

I wish I could put up 10 Flat Screens throughout my house…and play Bartolo’s Caddy Trot on a constant loop!

Thanks to the Cubs we’re now just a half game back of the Nats.

Colon has to stop swinging for the fences. He struck out twice. Once with Cabrera on second and the next time with Duda on third. He needs to pick up these runs and cut back on his swing. Does Colon expect to keep up this blistering home run pace all year?

Quoth Jamie Shields: the next time Colon faces me, he is going down!

The problem with the Cubs is that eventually we have to face them. Brian: its like shift; its great when it helps the Mets but stinks when it hurts us.

Cubs are firing on all cylinders now – bully for them.

But in no way am I dreading the Mets having to face them. The 1984 Tigers started 35-5 but didn’t come close to keeping that pace the rest of the season. I don’t think the Cubs will, either.

Colon boosts the ego of old fat guys everywhere.
