The Mets defeated the Brewers this afternoon at Citi Field 3-1, completing a three-game sweep and a successful 4-2 home stand.

  • Noah Syndergaard had some trouble finding command of his fastball in the early going, but seemed to settle in with it in the third. From there, it was smooth sailing save a hiccup in the 7th. His final line was 7 IP, 0 BB, 1 R (0 earned), and 11 Ks. He threw 109 pitches, his most this season and over 100 for only the third time this year. He’s just been outstanding.
  • Michael Conforto, who has not had a great May, went 1-3 with a walk and a solo homer, his eighth of the season. He seems to be coming around, however, slashing .294/.368/.706 in his last six games (not including today’s).
  • Rene Rivera was quite the pickup for the Mets last month. He’s certainly a defense-first/only catcher, but one that fits in perfectly with what the team needed behind the plate. He threw out Jonathan Lucroy in first, which was negated by a Kirk Nieuwenhuis strikeout to end the inning. He also threw out Alex Presley attempting to take second base on a ball in the dirt in the 7th, which was huge.
  • Hey, the Mets manufactured some offense sans long ball. They scored two on an Asdrubal Cabrera single in the fourth. As the booth mentioned, if they can get their production to even respectable levels with runners in scoring position, the offense will be that much better and more consistent.

That’s why you have to live KGR. They may not have full autonomy to rip the Mets like an independent announcer would (say Krukie), but in a polite way they don’t avoid the weaknesses.

Poor Kirk, he came in with a .278/.394/.456 line and then went 0-10 with 8 strikeouts.

    Agree!

I’ve Always been a Newee Booster…LH Bat with some pop…CF Glove and Speed… Plays hard… it should translate to platoon play, at the least. He’s getting another shot based on the attributes…sure, it’s a bad team (Brewers), but this is a chance to establish his game.

I don’t mean to minimize what I don’t understand about the difficulty of winning and keeping a Major League spot, but Kirk is a Poster Child for a good deal of what’s wrong with overall offensive approach. He’s totally sold out for the Long Ball….. Does he not understand or accept the fact that Contact is his solution to maintaining a Big League paycheck?

Joe Janish has been pushing kinesiology for a while, but this is a bit interesting:

I don’t think Kirk can hit quality pitching. He kills in Spring Training, and feasts on average pitchers. But he’s never been a good hitter once the competition ramps up.

I’d prefer him over De Aza for the glove and the savings.

JP– deAza was signed with a more prominent role in Mind…very tough to buy ab’s with Conforto and Grandy in tow…..but he’s a great insurance policy for an injury, versus:

    Special K
    KirK
    Konstant K
    KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK^
