The Mets dropped the rubber game of their weekend series against the Dodgers 4-2 at Citi Field this evening.

  • It was the Bartolo Colon versus Clayton Kershaw show, and it was amazingly not all that one-sided. Colon went 6 innings while giving up two earned runs and striking out three. It wasn’t phenomenal, but he certainly kept the Mets in it. He also had a pretty nice play in the fourth by snatching a comeback liner out of the air off of Yasiel Puig.
  • Kershaw was, you guessed it, phenomenal. He kept the Mets hitters off balance all night with his sheer…Kershawness. He struck out 10 in 7.2 innings while giving up two earned runs. The Mets managed to run his pitch count up to the point where Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had to give in to the fear of using his bullpen (the “not Kenley Jansen” division) at any point in an actual game. Kershaw left the game with a one run lead and was lifted for Adam Liberatore in the bottom of the eighth, who promptly gave up a game tying triple to Curtis Granderson. That Dave Roberts was on to something.
  • Speaking of Granderson, it may be that he’s heating up. He was 2-4 tonight with that RBI triple. Perhaps we’re starting to see signs of the Granderson of the second half of last season. The Mets sure could use him, as this lineup is getting barer and barer with every injury.
  • What is there to say about Jeurys Familia except that he’s been tremendously awful? He had his second straight terrible outing against the Dodgers, struggling to locate his splitter and coughing up two runs in his inning of work in the ninth, costing the team the game. He’s not been good, and it would do the Mets well to find out what the heck is wrong with him.
  • Asdrubal Cabrera hit a homer off of Kershaw, and that was fun. It really wasn’t all that bad of a game until Familia decided we had enough fun and it was time to go home.

Well, losing always sucks, but tonight not as much. I soon as I saw tonight’s lineup against Kershaw, I had it in the loss column anyway. Lagares your fifth hitter? If there was anytime to lead him off and pull Granny into the middle it was tonight, but really, has anyone ever moved such a stalwart leadoff hitter since the days of Raines and Ricky?

They made it exciting, what else can you expect? Is Ty Kelly legally allowed to start over Eric Campbell? Can’t wait til my buddy gets up to speed, figuratively that is.

Granderson is a “gamer”. He has a terrible stat line this year but seems to still be able to do things to put the Mets in a position to win. The casual fan won’t see it , and the sabermatic fan won’t see it, but the die hard who watches every game will see it. I can’t explain it better because I never believed in the myth of a “gamer” but witnessing it first hand there really must be players like this that the stat line is not the only line of measurement.
Familia had a 2.01 ERA two games ago. He has had two bad outings. His peripherals are down but the man has been an excellant closer. He still is an excellant closer and thank goodness we havehim. Keep your chin up Jeurys! Maybe TC can find another arm to use during non save situations so that yours won’t fall off come August. Remember, chin up and arm on. LGM

I couldnt agree more about Grandy. As for Familia. So much points to him not being lock down this year. A lot of hits, a lot of traffic. It will burn you, and the recent outcome is less of an aberration and more of a realization of permitting so many runners (the walks are new, but the hits are not).

Nine times out of 25 appearances Familia has had a clean inning, no hits,no walks. It is only in the last two appearances that he has given up six hits and three walks. No body is perfect everyday but Familia has a very good success rate as a closer and isn’t that what a closer is supposed to do?

yes, you are correct. I am frustrated on a number of fronts, and while the present results are not good, he is doing his job.

Im partly beleaguered by all the fanboi types that keep spouting how amazing every aspect of this team is not matter what happens.
