The Mets dropped game three of their four-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee today, 7-4.

  • Logan Verrett got the spot start this afternoon because of the doubleheader in Pittsburgh that threw the rotation off. The Mets needed him to pitch well and pitch deep to help an overworked bullpen. Unfortunately, he had trouble commanding his pitches and failed in both of those goals. He lasted just four innings while giving up five earned runs and three home runs. One of those homers was a two-run bomb to the opposing pitcher.
  • Curtis Granderson had himself another fine game, going 3-4 and missing the cycle by only a double. He appears locked in right now, which is something the Mets desperately need. He even stole a base!
  • Kelly Johnson appeared in his first game for the Mets this season after replacing Neil Walker, who left in the fourth inning with tightness in his lower back. He went 1-2 with a run scored.
  • The depleted bullpen was forced to pitch four innings in this one, and Terry Collins managed it to burn the least number of arms possible. Hansel Robles pitched a strong two innings, though he walked two. Antonio Bastardo, however, was not so fortunate. He also pitched two innings, but gave up two earned runs on three hits. Two of those hits were back-to-back home runs in the seventh.
  • Mets pitchers gave up five home runs and walked seven in this one. It’s a wonder the Brewers only scored seven runs.

Time to trade in our Verrett for a Gilmartin.

Maybe part of the long term plan was to showcase Verrett to the Brewers for a possible deal next month. Today’s performance probably didn’t help the cause.

This was Verrett’s fourth start. The first two in April we’re hosting the Marlins and at Philadelphia. He was very good.

The next one a month later was at Colorado. It was a disaster.

Today the four walks and a mere 56% strike pct. did him in. It was a bad start, but I don’t think the kind of start that makes the Mets want to look in a different direction just yet.

They just sent Verrett down to the minors.

      I saw. Oh well.
