The Mets won for the 11th time in 12 games after a scheduled day off with a 5-3 win over the Marlins Friday night in Miami. The Mets moved within a half game of the Marlins and five games of the Nationals, who lost to the Padres.

  • Jose Reyes returned to Miami and had a strong game against his old mates. He led off the first with a double, stole third (although he would have been out if the catcher didn’t drop the ball) and scored on a SF by Yoenis Cespedes. Reyes also had an RBI single in the fourth and scored another run on a Cespedes SF in the 7th.
  • James Loney did not start but came on as a defensive replacement and delivered an upper deck 2-run homer in the 9th inning that proved to be key insurance runs, as Jeurys Familia allowed a run in the ninth.
  • The setup men did another fine job. Hansel Robles delivered 1.2 scoreless innings and Addison Reed overpowered the Marlins in the eighth inning. The Mets scored three runs off the Marlins’ bullpen while the Fish only scored once against the Mets’ pen in 3.2 innings of work.
  • The Mets have won six of their last eight games against the Marlins.

Walker is hitting .242. PointTwoFourTwo !!!!!!!

A slump that lasts almost three months is concerning. Of course the flip side is what happens when he breaks out? Can we gamble with our season on this?

Right now, Flores has earned the right to be in the lineup and Walker has become dead weight. However, I am a big believer in talent (which is why I am endorsing “buying low” on Puig although there’s no way Friedman will just give him away). I believe Walker is better than this. So, I would keep him out a few games and do some work on the side as this guy is a good player in a deep funk.

Edit: No Metsense, I wouldn’t trade my mom for anyone, LOL.

Puig by year, last = this season

        BA .319, .296, .255, .256
        OPS .925, .863, .758, .695
        Salary remaining in M$ 7.2, 8.2, 9.2

His production is far less than Grandy, who you will need to bench. Total mystery to me. His biggest advocate is Jim Bowden, who has also given up hope. Why do we want a 25M$ reclamation project?

I ask if the White Sox do Flores and Nimmo for Frazier.

        • TexasGusCC

Chris, if this guy was in your minors, you would be salivating. If the chance is worth it, take it. What if Cespedes stays and helps him? What’s it worth to you? You’re running a billion dollar business and you wouldn’t take a calculated chance on this talent? Calculated = Small.

          • Chris F

Minors? He’s getting worse every year in 4 pro years. I don’t understand who you bench to play him and take the heat for benching a better player. Don’t hold your breath, I’d say Ces staying is remote at best.

You couldn’t even give me Puig just to assume his contract.

      • Metsense

Gus, there is not a need for an outfielder. There is a need for a more permanent solution at third base. I would kick the tires on Todd Frazier. At least you are reasonable enough not to trade your mother but you had me wondering about that for awhile!

        • TexasGusCC

Metsense, Frazier is almost 31 y.o. and is a declining lifetime .251 hitter with a 112 RC+, and his defense metrics have been skewing downward and this year are all negative. You sure this is the guy you want to go after and not a talent oozing mid-20’s dynamo, assuming the packages are similar or even close? I would want the kid, but I would carefully consider what I’m giving; it has to be worth the gamble.

          • Chris F

Frazier has, this year, 28 HR, 64 RBI, and almost .800 OPS.
Puig has, this year, 7 HR, 32 RBI, and almost .700 OPS.

Frazier stable through time, Puig falling off a cliff

      • Eric

And pray tell, where do you play Puig?

  • Metsense

The unexpected power of James Loney (HR) and Jose Reyes (double) led the way to a much needed victory. Reyes had some really nice glove work and strong accurate throws to 1B.
It would be a good time to rest Walker and give Johnson a couple of starts.
Centerfield is expansive at Marlins Park so Lagares should start the next two games and let Conforto spell Grandy on Sunday.
Robles has been pitching great but help is still needed in the pen.
This was the second consectutive serviceable start by Verrett. Nice job for a fifth starter.

  • Eric

Not to nitpick but to say Reyes would have been out if the catcher hadn’t dropped the ball is a gross assumption on your part. If he didn’t make a good throw he still would have been safe.

    • Brian Joura

Sure but it’s far, far less of an assumption than a catcher with a 43% CS percentage would make a bad throw to 3B.

      • Eric

Fine, so a 43% chance he’d be out then.

        • Brian Joura

Please, you need to stop. Did you see the replay? Reyes wasn’t even 2/3 of the way there when Realmuto dropped the ball. If he makes a normal throw, he’s out by three steps.

          • Eric

Oh come on Brian, have a sense of humor.. Just pointing out the fallacy of making absolute statements when the evidence doesn’t justify it, that’s all..

            • Brian Joura

It’s not a fallacy. He was a dead duck if the catcher didn’t drop the ball. I’m sorry that pointing out the obvious offends you.
