The Mets sent Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell to the Reds for Jay Bruce. The newest acquisition has the power that Sandy Alderson likes but he’ll mean playing either Michael Conforto or Curtis Granderson in CF for the foreseeable future. Where do you stand?

I don’t love the move primarily because I don’t understand the purpose behind it. If New York needed more power, then I can live with his disappearing defense (despite voting that option). The problem is they need to sustain rallies, not whiff-or-homer. Plus defense would be helpful too with Lagares on the shelf for more than a month.

      Uh, 80 RBI! BARISP.

  • Eraff

I like The Dilson….so I’m feeling some pain.

The Move seems like a starting point to next year, rather than a finisher for this year.

Conforto, Grandy, Bruce……. Loney, Duda….deAza…Nimmo. I’m not sure how you play all of those cards!!!!

I agree. This is coverage in some respects if Ces walks, which is probable. I think the flip is worth it. There is some middle infield depth, and its clear Herrera was no longer the heir apparent. Bruce seems to be a guaranteed 90+ RBI with a strong BA with RISP. Hopefully there will be ducks to drive home for him. I think there must be some calculus to deal with Grandy.

My World is Better with Ces in it… MyYonis should stay!!!

Bruce is a two-tool player, no replacement for Yoenis.

In many respects, he’s the most “Metslike” hitter Sandy could find. Low BA, high power, tons of K’s, can’t field a lick.

I regard the RISP numbers as flukey from year to year.

      • Chris F

sure, but the 90+ RBIs and career .800 OPS are goof value. With Ces the big bat available as FA, expect a lot of options his way. Will he be a Met next year? Prob not. Is Bruce a poor-man’s Ces? That’s a possible way to look at it. If Ces does walk, he will be a critical offensive element next year.

I can’t diminish a 29 year old pro with almost 250 HR’s—he’s a Real Major League player! This depends on what you do next

I’m sorry –so does Bruce only have 25 RBI=====No, he leads the NL in RBI for a guy who failed for us twice. This is a great move. Defense is all desire and when you play for a losing team most guys don’t have the desire. also why is 265 a low ba Jimmy P.

Yasiel Puig did not travel with the Dodgers on Monday when they flew to Denver for a three-game series against the Rockies.

Puig, 25, stormed off after arriving at Dodger Stadium and being informed that he would either be traded or sent to the minors, according to major-league sources.

    (K Rosenthal)

I just hope this doesnt become an option…

    • TexasGusCC

It was rescinded by Rosenthal. He didn’t storm off and is accepting the minor league assignment.

    • TexasGusCC

I know how we as fans like guarantees when we look at players, but looking at the talent of a player is also important, and Puig is a “tool shed”. Last winter Cashman got a reliever no one would touch with a ten foot pole and turned him into a top prospect. Also, he got more for Beltran at 39 than Alderson got when he was 34. I bet Puig lands on the Yankees.

      • Jimmy P

Puig seems really toxic in the clubhouse, actively disliked. I think only a losing ballclub can risk him at this point.

  • MattyMets

Wasn’t Dilson Hererra the main reason we let Murphy leave? For far less in return we could have brought back Carlos Beltran to finish his career as a Met. No commitment beyond this year, a switch hitter also having a good year. And a great clubhouse guy. Now we have 5 left handed outfielders and two left handed first basmen to juggle. Who plays second next year? Reyes? Cheech? Or resign Walker?

I love the Bastardo- Niese deal even if we just use Niese as a long reliever/spot starter. Bastardo was a terrible signing. A great corresponding move would be to demote Lugo and recall Josh Edgin.

I was really hoping to get Joe Smith.

One more no brainer move is to pick up Juan Uribe again. He was DFA’d today.

    • MPG

Mattymets==how many 2b lead a team to the W.S., also we have a couple minor league SS who they say r not real SS=Like the guy who just hit the 3 run HR—He can’t be worse the Murphy was with the glove.

  • Metsense

They needed a bat to have a chance to get to the playoffs. 2.5 games out and the front office is at least trying. No he isn’t a perfect fit. I was a Dilson Hererra fan but he was not going to lead the Mets to the 2016 playoffs and Bruce may in 2016 and 2017.

    • Chris B

      +1

  • Jim W

Your worried about Bruce’s defense? Lifelong Red fan I can tell you Bruce is a decent right fielder. But before this year, very inconsistent with the bat. Hit great for 2 weeks and then 10 hits in a month. He has been more consistent this year. Also very class guy. I hope this deal works out for both teams.

  • Eric

Yes, I thought Herrera was the heir apparent. Makes the decision not to resign Murphy a bit perplexing. Though i liked the Walker trade, now, what seemed like somewhat of a lateral move at the time to buy time for Herrera now makes little sense except from a defense point of view.

  • TexasGusCC

I have no problem with the Bruce trade on its own. However, how does it fit into the Mets? The Mets are an unathletic and poor defensive team that strikes out alot. They don’t have too many good leadoff options and they strike out a ton. Further, when the Mets decided to abandon their “swing for the fences no matter the circumstances” approach, they became a better offense. So now, you bring in a player that is more of the things that don’t need and none of the things they do need.

I hate the offensive approach, I hate Collins, and I’m starting to hate Alderson’s dinosaur mentality. He shows no vision or flexibility when putting his rosters together. Give John Ricco the job and just be in charge of fanancial matters.

    • Chris F

well he brings a lot of RBIs, batting strong with RISP…these are things we dont have.

      • TexasGusCC

Chris, I start my post by saying that it’s a good trade if you just judge the trade. However, once we realize that he’s a better Granderson, but we still have Granderson, and they both need to play, and we also realize that it’s too many of this type of player that got us in trouble for all of May until they decided to stop trying to set the record for solo homers, then we must ask ourselves how will this team score runs? This slow team just got slower. This unathletic team is squeezing out the one youngster that might start in the outfield, that is their best chance for a steal or something manufactured.

I like Bruce, but you have no team speed, barely a leadoff hitter, your defense just got way worse because you must play a corner outfielder in CF since that’s all you have.

Edit: On second thought, why do I spend so much energy on this team? Don’t the guys that get the big bucks to see these things see them?

        • Chris F

I think the big difference is in how, me, or anyone values certain tools that players have. Everyone sees the same thing (although there are blogs that only see the world through blue and orange glasses). So you want a young athletic team, and that is great, but lets be clear, the guy running the team as a job does not value it. And Alderson said this wasnt a perfect fit, but a guy that can hit for real will have a spot in the line up and on the field. period. He brings in runs and if that continues on, then it will be good.

  • Eraff

Think about Bruce as Dan Murphy with an OF Glove. Given the choice, I’d rather have Bruce’s Bat in a Corner OF Slot than Murph in the IF.

Extended through 2017 at less than $15 Million, he has great value. He’s not a Ces Replacement, but he’s a Known Quantity.

I’m happy about what the Mets did. They were very conservative with young assets. The span of injuries covers many missing pieces—but not a singular missing piece that you could add to “fix” this 2016 team.

  • Charlie Hangley

    I’m OK with this.

If you can cast your mind back, the Mets in effect got Jay Bruce, Neil Walker and Vic Black while sending away Marlon Byrd, John Buck and Antonio Bastardo. On percentage, that’s a win.

  • Eraff

So…. once I played an entire Golf Course with my 7 iron because that’s what my playing partner suggested we do..it’s a “Thing”. I didn’t “get it” ….before, during or after.

deAza, Conforto, Bruce, Granderson, Nimmo, Duda, Loney…. Are these pices to one puzzle???? I don’t get it…. there must be a “next move”….next Moves????

  • Jimmy P

I think the Mets are better today with Jay Bruce than they were without him.

They increased their chances of getting in the playoffs.

And then there’s the thing nobody talks about: This is a Sports-Entertainment Business. Getting Bruce just made this season more entertaining, and it will increase interest, get more eyes on SNY, sell tickets. Life is more fun with Jay Bruce in the mix.

I look forward to seeing a healthy Cespedes hitting in front of Jay Bruce.

Down the road, I worry about Conforto, because I still believe in him as a player.

And, yes, I was not as sold on Herrera as others may have been. And, yes, if Herrera was not going to be the heir apparent, it makes the Murphy decision even more horrific & nonsensical. A strong belief in Herrera made letting Murphy go somewhat reasonable. But, yes, things change, and Dilson has not played particularly well in 2016. Cecchini passed him as a hitter, and that wasn’t supposed to happen.

  • DED

A year ago, if I had been playing a word-association game and Jay Bruce’s name had come up, my response would have been “Ben Grieve.” Then: “I pass.”

Okay, so he’s a bit better than that, but with the Mets outfield stripped of it’s most capable defenders, he is not the sort of addition I would have sought. And in a lower key I’ll mention my regret at not getting to watch Max Wotell develop; I had planned on doing that.
