After a bad loss last night, the Mets rebounded to defeat the Yankees at Yankee stadium tonight, 4-1, to split the four-game series.

  • After a rough start on short rest his last time out, Bartolo Colon put in a great performance in this one. His line: 6.2 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 0 BB, 1 K. It’s always nice to see good Bartolo, and this victory was especially notable. According to Gary Cohen, Colon is the first pitcher to have a win for both teams in the Subway Series. For reasons known only to Terry Collins, Colon was pulled with two outs in the seventh with just 90 pitches under his belt. Jerry Blevins was brought in and promptly gave up a single and a run.
  • Yoenis Cespedes was finally put on the DL, weeks after everybody but the Mets knew he should have been put on it. That made Jay Bruce the lone threat in the lineup. After going 0 for his first two, he launched a three-run homerun to put the Mets ahead 4-0 in the fifth inning. It was his 26th on the year and put him back in the NL lead for RBIs with 83. That broke an 0-10 to start his Mets career and an 0-19 overall.
  • The Mets offense was otherwise pretty quite in this one, except for a Kelly Johnson solo Yankee Stadium special to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. They amassed only six hits while striking out eight times.
  • Alejandro De Aza made a spectacular diving play in center, going towards right field and back. You’re sure to see it a bunch tomorrow morning.
  • Why can’t Jeurys Familia just have a clean save? Oy.
  • The Mets are back to one game behind the Cardinals and the Marlins for that second wild card spot.

    It was a good win.

In his last eight starts before tonight, Colon topped 90 pitches only one time.

In the Game Chatter, we were talking about how no one feels the Mets have played particularly well yet – but here they are, right in the thick of the WC chase. Hopefully we can continue to replicate last year’s August offense…

Lets not forget the Rockies are 1.5 behind the Mets….

    just some perspective.

Chris F , “does it increase your paranoia, like looking in a mirror and seeing a police car. But don’t give an inch to fear…” because Jacob won’t “cut his hair” and the Mets “feel like they owe it to someone”. (CSN&Y, Almost Cut My Hair)

      • Chris F

Was that meant for the Marlins?

The 3-run homer, my favorite play.

Bruce and Johnson led the offensive way to victory for the MASH Unit (Mets Anemic & Sickly Hitters) and kept them off life support for the wildcard. Some would say they are recovering by having cut the lead to one game. That would be an optimistic prognosis so lets just say it was a step in the right direction.
Two good defensive plays, the DeAza one mentioned and Reynolds field and flip to save Blevins. I agree, Colon should have faced at least one more batter.
Kelly Johnson, since infused with a Met intravenous, should be playing whenever possible. He has been delivering..
Addison – I know your aim is true.

One game out of the WC after the multitude of injuries this year is not bad, not bad at all. If Mets can grab and hold on in Aug to the WC, possibly shave down Nats lead to 5 before end of month, I like the chances for the team for WC, and even shooting for the division. Two reasons:
1- Zack Wheeler . A fresh arm in Sept like his is a weapon
2- Softer sched in September – no mercy for the likes of Phils, Braves !

A lineup of SS Reyes, CF Grandy, LF Cespedes (Conforto while he is on DL), RF Bruce, 3B Flores (keep him there and he will hit), 1B Loney, 2B Walker (he’s back), C D’arnaud, is plenty good enough if the pitching holds up as expected.

Bench of KJ, Nimmo, De Aza, Reynolds, Rivera.
Each has made an impact this year, with De Aza just starting to do so, and could be doing more soon in CF, probably best defensive OF right now that team has.

At this point, I think TC has the pieces. Disagree on Flores; I would not start him most games vs. RHP for a stretch, giving those ABs to Johnson.

De Aza should get a lot more time in CF.

Conforto is going to have to make a case for himself in sporadic playing time. He still has too many “lost” ABs. Just a strange season all around for him.

It is bizarre and willful that management hasn’t brought in a RH outfield bat. Nimmo useless in this mix. Clearly Alderson deeply believes in the lefty specialist for the pen; that he operates without a counter on the offensive side strikes me as negligent and weirdly inconsistent.

    • Brian Joura

I agree that the lefty “thing” is inconsistent. But I don’t view the current OF hitting situation as a major negative.

I’m okay with the Bruce acquisition. I guess you could argue that Melvin Upton Jr. would have been a better overall fit but I’d rather gamble on questionable OF defense than Upton maintaining an elevated BABIP and keeping his Ks in check.

The 5th OF being a lefty hitter is not a big deal – he’s not going to get a ton of playing time, regardless. Is it ideal? No. Is it worth worrying about? No.

On a separate note, which diving OF grab in CF was more shocking — Conforto’s or De Aza’s?

  • Eraff

With Flores at SS and Conforto in CF…and without a RH OF Bat… I don’t see that as having the pieces—certainly not pieces to this single puzzle.

The playoffs are the land of Hot Pitchers and “some luck”. If they can get there, they can hope for a string of 2-3 hot starters and the possibility of a Bullpen Hammer…. and some luck.

A nice win and still feel like we’re in it. I’m super excited for the Tigers series. I can’t remember the last time we played them. They have a neat stadium and some exciting players. Tonight’s pitching matchup is awesome. Can’t’ wait to see how the Mets do against Verlander. Shame it looks like we won’t get to see Fulmer.

One other thing, as much as I miss Duda, Loney has really done a nice job.

  • Eraff

I’d bet against a Duda return to the Mets…too many other Bats to place at 1b…younger, cheaper…Better????
