The Mets are on their best hot streak of the year, having won 15 of their last 19 games. Back in 2011, after the conclusion of that season, I wrote an article about the top 10 hot streaks in team history. That article is getting some views now, so it seems like a good time to update it.
Hot streak is a nebulous term, and back then the definition used was a minimum of 20 wins. So, what the Mets are doing now doesn’t yet qualify. Hopefully they continue their hot play and hopefully they qualify for the list.
The 10th-best streak was the 1988 Mets, who went 28-8 for a .778 winning percentage. Right now, the Mets have a .789 winning percentage in their last 19 games. If they go 5-2 in their next seven games, their winning percentage would drop to .769 and it wouldn’t be enough to make the list.
Anyway, here are the best hot streaks by the Mets since the original article was posted, using the same 20-win requirement.
2012 – 23-15 (4/24 – 6/3)
2013 – 21-13 (6/18 (G1) – 7/26 (G1))
2014 – 20-14 (7/4 – 8/11)
2015 – 20-6 (8/18 – 9/14)
That streak in 2015 was great yet not enough to crack our list. That topped out at a .769 winning percentage, not enough to beat the .778 of the ’88 Mets. The 2015 Mets also went 31-11 at one point but that’s a .738 percentage. More wins but a lesser winning percentage.
We need one more streak until the end of this year.
