On this third weekend of NFL action, the Mets broke out a football score, as they put up two touchdowns and a field goal to beat the Phillies, 17-0, in the last regular season game of 2016 in Citi Field.

  • The game started on a somber note, as the broadcast started with a tribute to Jose Fernandez, who died in a boating accident. The Mets hung a jersey with Fernandez’ name in the dugout and several times during the game, we saw people go over and touch the jersey.
  • The Mets pounded out 14 hits, added nine walks and four HBPs. Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera each drove in four runs, with Cabrera’s coming on a grand slam homer. Curtis Granderson added a solo homer, his 30th of the season.
  • As much of a story as the offense was, perhaps the most encouraging thing was the continued strong pitching of Robert Gsellman. He went seven innings for the first time in the majors, allowed just three hits and struck out eight. According to the Yahoo! boxscore, he had 12 grounders compared to one fly ball.
  • The Mets scored 44 runs in the four-game set versus the Phillies and hold a 10-6 edge in the season series with three games yet to play in Philadelphia. The Mets dropped two of the first three games this year against the Phillies and have gone 9-4 since then.

Did the Phillies actually try today? If anyone goes to a Fan Appreciation Day game, this is what it should be like.

Next stop a very uncomfortable trip to Miami, where the atmosphere will be solemn. Don’t know how those guys can even put on a uniform much less play a game, but MLB will make them play the games. Life goes on, I guess.

Did y’all see the comment by Daniel Murphy in the Washington papers about Saturday night’s game? He said that he never rooted so hard for the Phillies in his life. I understand his emotion, but it hurt to hear it. I hate the rest of that team anyway, but Murphy…

The 2012 Mets lost a September game 16-1, so it hasn’t been that long since we were on the opposite side of this.

Reminded me of what Earl Weaver described as the perfect game scenario: Score 9 in the first inning, then gradually pull away.

In 1964 the Mets scored 19 runs against the Cubs and the running joke was, Great, but did they win?
Wow, 17-0, and another enjoyable Sunday afternoon. Gsellman was dominant. Giants and Cards lost. It is in their hands with six games left. It will be a difficult time in Miami the next three days. Condolences to the family and the organization. Such a tragedy.
Win the next two series and 87 wins should do it. Lets Go Mets
