The Mets’ five-game win streak came to an end Friday night, as the Marlins scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 3-2 win. It was the first one-run loss of the year for New York.

  • The Mets were hoping that Noah Syndergaard would go deep in the game to give their tired bullpen a rest. And he had a low enough pitch count but had to leave the game after six innings when he developed another blister. He allowed two runs, one earned, over six.
  • Lucas Duda gave the Mets a 2-1 lead when he cracked a solo homer in the fifth inning. It was his fourth homer of the year.
  • Michael Conforto drove in the Mets’ other run with a sac fly in the first. But the big part of Conforto’s night was a play he made in the seventh inning to keep the game tied. The Marlins had the bases loaded and one out and Christian Yelich hit a sharp liner that Conforto fielded on the run. He then fired the ball to the plate on the fly, Rene Rivera applied the tag and the out call on the field was upheld by replay.
  • The Mets had two runners on in the eighth and a runner on first with one out in the ninth but were unable to score both times.

Syndergaard is soft. This is junk.

    Gut reaction:

    Those @#$%& Marlins!

Funny thing is, yesterday while listening to the few innings on radio, Lewin made a point of saying how Dee Gordon was the perfect pickup for the Marlins because he is a Mets killer like so many Marlins before him. He fits the team profile. I don’t want to raise them to Braves or Nationals status by saying I hate them, since they perennially suck, but I did think how 40 years ago Gordon would have gotten one in the ribs at some point.

the Marlins play this team hard. They may not be the Braves or Phillies of old, but it seems Gordon or Prado or realmuto or Ozuna is up every time a key situation arises.

Why am I in moderation? And, I wasn’t when I originally posted it but it threw me in moderation a bit later.

My guess is that when you include a link, the system automatically puts it in moderation. Given the amount of spam and viruses today, this is a solid and fairly universal policy. You shouldn’t take it personally.

      • Brian Joura

And on top of that, think long and hard if the link is really necessary.

        • TexasGusCC

Well, that’s certainly a game changer. If links are frowned upon, we should adjust because it used to be that when you use a source, you wanted to provide a link, too.

And James, Brian encouraged links to other blogs but not more than one per comment. But, that’s ok, I can follow our general code.

In general, I’m in a pissy mood right now. I’m trying hard for this to not sound that way but please cut me some slack if it does. Thanks.

I recently upgraded the site and it had some unintended consequences. The most annoying was that for some reason posts from you and Metsense were going to moderation. It’s worked out now that your posts hit the site except for when they have a link. I do not know why that is. I have it set up that anything with more than one link gets held up. I have no idea why when you do a post with just one that it does that.

If you’re coming up with something that runs contrary to something you see here or buttresses what you see here to an amazing extent — please provide a source.

But you tend to get link happy. I understand that you see something you like and you want to share it with other people. But the bottom line is when you post those links, you’re inviting people to leave my site. It’s as if someone came into your restaurant and announced to everyone, “You really have to try the Chicken Parm down the street!” And it’s one thing if it’s Chicken Parm that would make the gods’ mouths water. But I know I was annoyed the other day when there was a link to something that was the equivalent of rubber chicken.

Wilmer Flores 0-14 against RHP. 1-20 against non-Chen pitchers.
    Jose Reyes batting .100

    O Wright, where art thou?

    • Chris F

Flores is horrible. His best place for sure is 1B against LHP. Otherwise its pure agony to watch. Reyes isnt a .100 hitter, but at best he is a mis .200s and sadly barely a .300 on base.

The lack of balance on this team just remains frustrating. Why is there no 3B in the system? Why is there no lead-off hitter for years? Why is catching and center field always an issue?

  • Metsense

A tough loss with Noah on the mound. Reyes may be awaking up with one hit and two walks along with going from first to third on a bunt. It would have been nice to cash in that run after a hustle heads up play like that. So where does Conforto play? Reyes should start at SS and give Cabrera a rest. Lets start another streak tonight.

  • Jimmy P

An encouraging game by Reyes. He’s not a .100 hitter. Given regular rest, he’ll be good enough at 3B for Mets. The formula: consistent time off, lower expectations. The only problem is if TC figures him as “my leadoff guy.” So far, signs are good that TC has a grasp on the situation. Loved Conforto leading off the other day.

The goat in last night’s game was Montero, who failed badly. Given the situation, entering the 7th, Mets absolutely needed Montero to give them a couple of good innings. Instead he created a game emergency. After only one out, TC had to pull Montero because keeping him in would have been to surrender the game without a fight.

Conforto is better than Granderson, but I don’t think he catches that ball on the track in the 6th. My gut says no. I also think he’s better than Bruce, but JB has played very well so far.

I think Brian is right in that it’s time to give MC a few starts vs. LHP. Just to see how it goes, even if Lagares is available. To date, TC has very carefully only used MC in spots where he had best chance to succeed, build confidence.

Yes, Cabrera needs a rest. Cespedes probably needs another — the flu is tough — but we’ll see how that goes. PHing last night he went up and took three strikes.

No need to pile on Flores. He’s here to hit LHP and plays an extremely tough role. Easy to get off to a slow start with irregular play. I think he’s competitive vs. RHP — and I believe it would get marginally better given more ABs — but that doesn’t really make sense given the roster. He is in the right role and has real value against LHP. I have the phrase, “It is what it is,” but in this case . . . .

Would help if Neil Walker joins the party.

All in all, Salas, Reed needed rest last night and got it.

Smoker earned the job with Thursday’s performance. Edgin just isn’t very good and has never been very good over any stretch of time. Unreliable. A shame if he’s out of options. It’s not particularly sad to lose him, but a worry because Mets are a little short in the pen, not seeing the strong candidates in the minors. Getting Familia back will be a good thing.
