The Mets were swept for the second straight series, as they lost the series-closer against the Diamondbacks, 5-4, Wednesday afternoon in Arizona.

  • The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but by the third inning, they were trailing. They went back on top in the fourth inning but the game was tied in the seventh and lost in the 11th, the seventh-straight defeat for the club.
  • Michael Conforto gave the Mets the early lead with an opposite field homer. Juan Lagares also homered and Jose Reyes, who delivered a three-hit game, drove in the other run.
  • The bullpen had a decent day. Josh Edgin, Jerry Blevins and Addison Reed combined for 3.2 scoreless innings. The only run allowed by the pen initially came when Robert Gsellman, moved to a reliever with the off day, allowed the tying run in the seventh. But then Rafael Montero gave exhibit number 497 that he’s not a reliever, as he served up a homer to the first batter he faced. There’s really no reason to have him on the team at this point. Just DFA him and wish his next team luck.

    Flores had three hits.

Montero not a reliever? How about not a ML pitcher. The game was lost the moment he entered, and everybody knew it, including TC.

One of the reasons the good pitchers are overworked — and there are quite a few contributing factors — is that there’s usually been at least 2 guys in the pen at all times who can’t be trusted to get an out.

Today Salas got some rest, but, oh yeah, we gave away the game. The Sophie’s Choice that TC has faced all season long.

      Poor TC…

Did you hear his monologue the other day about matchups? Maybe if he used Montero in Gsellman’s appearance (where he belonged, lower leverage) and if he would let a reliever pitch a whole inning – God forbid – he may not have run out of relievers or have the entire bullpen overworked in mid-May. At least I can bitch out Flores when he deserves it, what is it with you and Collins?

      • Jimmy P

So now your criticism is TC didn’t use Montero in the 7th inning?

        I’m trying to keep up.

I don’t have anything with Collins. I realize he’s not perfect (but not terrible either). It’s the endless whining that I find so petulant.

        • TexasGusCC

I didn’t criticize the usage at all, but telling was that I was listening on the radio and Cohen and Lewin both commented and basically emphasized that it was a high leverage situation that has not worked well for Montero. That’s the radio announcers! Think the manager should have known when he was planning his moves?

As far as whining, it’s ironic that from announcers to newspapers to fans criticize Collins’ usage and bullpen decisions, more so lately, so how do you (1) call us whiners? (2) keep seeing no problem?

Harvey was not sharp, no command, but serviceable.Edgin’s stock is rising.I am glad we have another year of Blevins. Reed was sharp. Conforto has 10 home runs to go along with his nice batting average. Three more hits vs LHP for Flores. In a limited role he is an asset. See, there are some positive things when look hard enough.

We need to put a few more pieces on the field, get some good outings by Lugo and Matz; get Cespedes back in the line-up; and call up Rosario and maybe we can win a game or two.

    • TexasGusCC

Two? You mean, like, in a row?

lets not over do things Gus.

    Only 497?

What exactly does Montero have to do to get cut?

    2016 – ERA 8.05, WHIP 2.053
    2017 – ERA 9.69, WHIP 2.846!!!

Of course there is the interesting horse race to monitor as the Twins picked up Adam Wilk. Yes, they really did.

    Wilk

    2017 – ERA 9.00, WHIP 2.000

Can Montero rebound and catch Wilk? Is that why he remains on the roster, perhaps Sandy, as I did today, placed a bet on the outcome?

I’m fine with calling out TC for using the guy. I would go with Plawecki over him, especially in a one inning situation. But what is he doing on the roster?

    • IDRAFT

And yes, I took Wilk, and yes I had to give 2-1.

  • Eraff

I’m not convinced that Montero will never succeed—but he will never succeed here. A change in scene may make him more open and ready and able to try 2.0….the exisiting version has been getting thumped for 3 years.

Somehow, there should be no “next time” for what he now does–and that means he needs to be off of this roster….and probably out of the organization. It would be the last good thing they could do for him.

Looks like TJ has not taken too kindly since Duda came back.

    6 games .182/.217/.273

Season OPS down to 755 and fading fast. Maybe some were too quick to anoint him as a hitter as if he doesn’t change the script, he could be following the same path as Josh Satin and Eric Campbell, who also both had initial successes before MLB pitchers figured them out for good.
