Jacob deGrom came up with his second straight dominant outing, as he both pitched and hit the Mets to a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon. The win allowed the Mets to salvage the last game of the four-game series against the Nationals and gave the team a 3-4 mark in the first seven games of this tough 11-game stretch.

  • Everything was working today for deGrom, who gave up just an unearned run in eight innings. Overall, he allowed just three hits and a walk. In his last two games, deGrom seems to have traded strikeouts for innings and it’s been a terrific deal for the Mets.
  • After his defense put him in an early 1-0 deficit, deGrom evened things up with an opposite field homer, the first of his career. He also had a sacrifice that led to a run scored.
  • The Mets moved Wilmer Flores to 2B today but the ball still found him. He was unable to field a hard-hit ball in the first, which led to the Nats’ only run. And later on he was unable to complete a double play ball because of a poor throw. No error was charged because you can’t assume the DP but the Mets were lucky to avoid damage there.
  • The Mets took advantage of questionable defense by the Nats for their next two runs, getting a baserunner thanks to a pop fly by Lucas Duda that Daniel Murphy didn’t field. Duda came around to score on a single by Travis d’Arnaud to center. Michael Taylor made a poor throw to the plate and Matt Wieters was unable to hang on to the ball. The Mets’ third run came on a ball hit by Michael Conforto that Anthony Rendon was unable to turn into an out. It was nice to see the other team not making all of the plays for a change.
  • Mets added a run off the Nats’ bullpen. Washington relievers pitched 8.1 low leverage innings in this series and gave up five runs.
  • Addison Reed pitched for the second straight game in a non-save situation. It’s hard to blame Terry Collins for not having faith in any other reliever at this point and feeling like they couldn’t risk blowing this game. Let’s hope the Mets don’t need Reed in a clutch situation tomorrow.

deGrominator ! with the bat and his arm.
Conforto who is in a slump but gets two hits, a walk, 2 RBI’s and only hit the ball hard once. The good players make there presence felt even when slumping.
Call me old fashioned but if they would have pushed deGrom, who was in total command, past 105 pitches they may have saved 18 pitches on Reed .
I prefer Reyes batting eighth. Bottom line, a 3-4 home stand when at least a 4-3 was needed.
” Don’t pick up the newspapers. Just go win baseball games. The only thing you can control is how you play. If you go win games, you’ll get back in the race.” — Mets manager Terry Collins
    TC realizes the situation.

deGrom was just the guy. Its so nice to see him like this again. I close my eyes and imagine 3 starters doing this night after night. Would be awesome.

Flores watch: His defensive shortcomings are hard to hide. Today was no different at 2B. Fielding error lets in an unearned run, and a late inning failed DP wild throw to 1B could have unlocked a big inning. Even if no one in the media grills TC about Flores, I will keep vigilant.

What, no mention of TJ’s four hits? What does he have to do for you guys to show the love? If Flores is so bad on defense play TJ!

Didn’t mean to neglect your favorite player. I certainly would prefer to see him playing the field before Flores.

Pencil him in at third base and bat him second. Every day. Period.
With Cespy hitting behind him, he could really become a great table setter. Along with Conforto, could be the one-two hitters we haven’t had in years.
