The Mets were shot out of a cannon to start the second half with an explosive 14-2 win over the Rockies at Citi Field.

  • Following a rocky first inning, Jacob deGrom settled down to pitch eight dominant innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, while striking out 11. He also contributed two hits to bring his season average up to .286.
  • The Mets offense went into high gear delivering 19 hits and seven walks.
  • Yoenis Cespedes had four hits and Jose Reyes had three.
  • Michael Conforto and T.J. Rivera hit home runs.
  • deGrom, Conforto, Rivera, Asdrubal Cabrera and Lucas Duda all had two-hit games.
  • Travis d’Arnaud and Jay Bruce each got one hit and a walk.
  • Cespedes gunned down a runner at the plate with a throw that didn’t seem humanly possible. Look up the replay if you missed it.
  • The Rockies got two hits apiece from Charlie Blackmon and Gerardo Parra, but not much else. Their pitchers, from start Jon Gray to three out of four relievers, got knocked around like bad prize fighters.

Tomorrow night the series continues with Seth Lugo taking on Tyler Chatwood. Let’s keep it going and let’s go Mets!

Offense is fun. Hopefully, it will show up on days deGrom doesn’t pitch, too.

The Rockies are 5-14 in their last 19 games. The D’Backs are 3-9 in their last 12 and two of those wins were against the Rockies. No wonder the Cubs and Braves still feel good about their playoff chances.

Exactly, Brian. As I pointed out a month back, there are always a few teams that get off to hot starts and fizzle out. On the flip side, there’s always a team that rides the momentum of a great second half, as the Mets did in 2015.

The DBacks, Rockies and especially the Brewers do not look like legitimate playoff teams to me. Of the 3, I like the DBacks the best because of their 1-2 punch in the rotation, but the other two lack the arms to sustain winning for 162 games. The Dodgers and Nats are virtual locks and I believe the DBacks will hang on and the Cubs will inevitably take over in the Central. That leaves the second wild card up in the air and as you well know, this stubborn optimist never gives up hope.

In other news Fartolo was roughed up again… this time in AAA. So glad that cheating fatty spurned the bumbling idiot Alderson

Did you hear that he mentioned that no players from the Mets reached out to him? Just seems odd for a guy who was supposed to be so great with the younger guys.

That’s good to hear. It shows that Mets players aren’t idiots and emphasize winning over friendship. And it doesn’t make sense for anyone to reach out to him except maybe deGrom, Familia, Matz, Blevins or Reed. All the other pitchers are on the bubble in my book and wouldn’t want another potential competitor who could take their roster spot. And of course the hitters would love another chance to rock him so they would want to see him sign with another team.

I’m sure most of us have friends that we love but wouldn’t want to work with
