The Mets fell behind 5-0 early but rallied to score 10 runs in the next three innings to earn a 10-5 win and even the series at a game apiece Wednesday night in Denver.

  • Just about everyone contributed on offense. Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson both homered in the game. Bruce hit a solo shot to the opposite field to pull the Mets within three and Granderson’s three-run shot to right put the Mets up, 8-5. Amed Rosario was credited with a triple on a ball touched by a fan, a play that results in a double 999 times out of 1,000. May have been a mistake to give him the extra base here but he was rewarded for busting it out of the box. Asdrubal Cabrera contributed three hits.
  • While the offense was terrific, the real story of the game was the bullpen, which combined for six shutout innings. Chasen Bradford was credited with the win with his two innings but perhaps the biggest surprise was Fernando Salas throwing a scoreless inning in Coors.
  • Paul Sewald also contributed two scoreless frames. In his last 15 apperances, he has a 2.12 ERA and a 0.765 WHIP, with 5 BB and 20 Ks. A.J. Ramos closed the game out.
  • The only bad note of the night was rookie Chris Flexen again getting hit hard. He pitched two scoreless innings but allowed five runs in the fifth. There were reports of a blister on his hand, which possibly contributed to his demise.

The starting pitching is still horrendous (as if miraculously it should better since yesterday?). In the last 30 games , deGrom is the only starter with at ERA below 5.25. The relief corp won this game and they have turned it around during the same time frame with four of them having below 3.00 ERA’s and two below 4.00 ERA’s. Hey, it is something. The offense broke out last night and hopefully it will continue. Conforto, Bruce, Flores and Reyes are the only four with an above .800 OPS in the last thirty days. The offense has to overcome the starting pitching in order is win games as they did last night.

Not to worry, we’ve got Montero going tonight.

I was at the game along with a load of other Met fans all along the visitor’s dugout area. We gave JDG a standing ovation as he came in to pinch hit plus the “lets go mets” when needed. Denver fans were non-caring. Chris Flexen tortured us by going deep in counts, putting Mets fans and the fielders in a bad mood.

After the five run deficit it seemed like the flood would continue but like Brian wrote, when F Salas looked clean and smart you knew it was a W.

I’m not sure if SNY showed it but Curtis Granderson showed heightened emotion on a call strike that he obviously thought otherwise.

I suppose this is the team we thought was 2017: emotional play, hitting and the starters withntheir 3.00 era. Last night we got 2 of 3.

Pitchers have been attacking Granny differently this year. This year we see pitchers going upstairs more against hin. The one that I saw him react to was a pitch that seemed at the top of the letters that was called a strike. Perhaps you saw a different one as I missed half the game.

But I don’t think either team was happy with the umpiring last night, which got worse when the home plate umpire had to leave.

In some little ledger somewhere, the Rockies’ gasbag of a catcher got credit for “framing” that strike to Curtis and saving his team .025 runs.

The rest of us know it was just a lousy call.

        (I’ll stop.)

999 times out of a thousand? I’d say it’s more like 1,000 times out of a thousand. Seriously, in fifty years of watching baseball, I simply can’t recall a single instance in which third base was given to a guy on a ball touched by a fan.
BTW Brian, if you are interested, I responded to your Pony Express take at the bottom of the Alderson thread. There was no reply box under your comment.
