It was a close game until the end, but in the end Travis Taijeron came in clutch with a walk-off single to help the Mets secure victory, 4-3. This was just the cherry on top for a solid offensive night for Taijeron, who had two singles on the night, along with two strikeouts. Kevin Plawecki had a single and a home run on the evening, and Brandon Nimmo had a double and a single. My Gut Reaction is that Plawecki and Nimmo are making their cases to be on next year’s team with strong offensive production down the stretch.
Rafael Montero had another quality start on the mound. He allowed three earned runs, gave up eight hits, and struck out three. The best stat for Montero was the fact that he only had two walks. This is promising for Montero, who usually suffers from high amounts of walks.
The bullpen was very strong on the evening. Josh Smoker, Hansel Robles, and Jeruys Familia combined for three clean innings with three strikeouts. Familia came away with the win tonight. Tomorrow, Robert Gsellman takes the mound at 7:10 as the Mets try to take the series from the Atlanta Braves.
The game was meaningless and the stadium was half empty, but it was nice to see the kids have something to celebrate.
I’m very curious to see the probables for the Phillies series. Shapes up as Syndergaard, Harvey and deGrom. Could we possibly end this brutal year on a high note.
I agree with your gut reaction abut Nimmo and Plawecki. Nimmo now needs to start hitting LHP and work on his outfield defense. Plawecki has solidified a back up catcher spot. Montero, although spotty, did achieve a quality start which kept the team in the game. It is heartwarming to see Taijeron get his fifteen minutes of fame.
