While the Mets universe concentrated on the Carig piece, the Mets played a game against the Phillies and came out on the short side of a 6-2 score Friday night in Philadelphia.

Matt Harvey continued to be unimpressive. He was solidly in the mid-90s with his fastball but with no breaking ball to speak of, hitters were able to sit dead red. And in a perfect end to his 2017 campaign, Harvey balked in a run when the ball fell from his hand during his windup.

Hansel Robles did nothing to improve his chances of getting tendered a contract in the offseason as he gave up two homers.

Jose Reyes and Dominic Smith accounted for the Mets scoring, as each belted a solo homer. Smith also drew a walk and was unable to field an in-play pop-up. He’s been nearly the exact opposite of what we were expecting. Good power, few hits and rotten defense.

Kevin McGowan and Jacob Rhame each threw a scoreless inning. Rhame’s ERA now sits at 11.57 with the Mets.

Jose didn’t do much to help out the rook on that play.

Harvey had a disaster of a season while recovering from his injury. He should eventually get back to being a productive pitcher sometime in 2018. The Mets don’t have the luxury of waiting through this process. He will be a free agent in 2019. Trade him this winter and move on. The Mets need reliability from the third spot in the rotation in 2018.
Jose Reyes has led the team in games played and at bats this year. The average NL second baseman has a 739 OPS and Reyes has a 728 after a non existent first half. He has a 831 OPS in the second half. The decision to sign him for next year doesn’t have to be made until later in the winter. He has played well enough for serious consideration.

The numbers are good with Jose, especially if you ignore that he failed so spectacularly when the games still mattered. He also looked half-hearted while doing it.

On an individual basis, you can go up and down the roster and conclude, “Bring ’em all back.” An argument can be made for every single player.

But I don’t think that gets it done.

And I don’t think it changes the culture of this team, the Zeitgeist of the 2018 Mets. We’ve added Rosario & Smith and subtracted Bruce & Walker.

And we very well might not see Conforto ready to roll until . . . we don’t know.

OTOH: Add Syndergaard to this team is a huge swing right there.

Is Matz going to be able to pitch? Will Wheeler? Lugo?

Gsellman, Montero, Flexen. We’ve seen that movie.

There’s work to be done and I don’t think the status quo is the way to go. I

David Wright is a little off-point in his “cowardly” remarks.

Because the real quotes are coming from Jeff Wilpon and some other “front office” lieutenant. That’s the ammunition Carig needed to real a big story. Then he filled in with an anonymous player gripe or two. That stuff is always there.

This is a leadership problem that starts at the very top. But DW’s comments underscore the fact there’s no leadership in the clubhouse. There’s nobody left. It’s just a bunch of guys, some Strat-O-Matic cards tossed on a table. When Jose Reyes is your veteran presence, you are in trouble. I personally like Astrubal Cabrera, but he’s not that guy, either. If he got traded tomorrow, he’d feel relief.

    A mess, a NY mess.

Wright hasn’t been around all year, yet from his living room he calls the other guys cowards. When he was coming up, did his manager sit him for a veteran? Did his manager give him feedback and help? Was his manager supportive or did Wright know that the manager would do whatever he could to sabatoge Wright’s progress? Big difference in how the younger player gets treated now. It would be nice to have Wright recognize that and tone down the remarks for his loser manager.

Worry about your health David. Thanks for the quote. Next time, tell the writer to call Flores, Conforto, and Lagares. And, is TDA still batting eighth? Maybe ask Salas how his arm feels after missing spring training but being burned through by mid May.

The Vacuum is Bigger than the Players, individually and collectively.

The recovery of health and performance by 3 front line starters will provide this team with an anchor. Like it or not, That is the “Personality” of this team.

You cannot sell off the foundation on the Cheap—You can’t get a bag of balls for Matt Harvey…and he’s a 6 million dollar lottery ticket—Cheap!!!! If you’re gonna remake the entire concept, you sell off the most Valuable Parts…not the Mark-Downs!!! That Means Jacob deGrom. That brings you Talent.

    Moose…Bruce…Prayer.

Mets managed to stay one game ahead of the Padres in the race for the #6 pick. Strength of schedule is a non-factor, with Padres going up against the Giants. I don’t know how the tie-breaker is determined. This is going to come down to the last day. Fitting that it’s against Alderson’s previous organization. He did such a great job in San Diego!

    • Brian Joura

Tiebreaker is W-L record from the year before.

It’s important to realize that Alderson was CEO and not GM of the Padres. GM was Kevin Towers. Alderson had more to do with establishing a presence for the Padres in the Dominican Republic than on day to day moves. The SD Tribune called the Dominican facility, “enormous, immaculate and the envy of teams in the region.”

  • Eraff

I gues that’s the Origin and Source of all the Great Dominican Ballplayers the Padres now field…oh,..,..Wait….

    • Brian Joura

So let’s see if I’ve got this straight. If I build a facility and you staff the facility and the staff stinks – it’s my fault?

      • Eraff

Of couse not!…. I’m just having some fun piling on Sandy—it’s not a fair comment on my part, and it certainly was not aimed at you.

But…about the positive comments on Sandy’s San Diego Work—Un-Named Source??? 😉
