Jose Reyes is off to a dreadful start, 0-for-2018 in fact. We have other options to fill his role in AAA. Do we wait it out and hope to be rewarded like last season or do we pull the plug and give someone else a shot? How long a leash does he get?
Jose needs to work out his hitting struggles in AAA. None of the Mets infielders who can play SS are hitting this year but you need to at least bring up a really good infielder so money is on that Alderson brings up Luis Guillorme.

Jay Bruce talking about why he came back to the Mets. He never mentions the fact that no one offered him a third year or anywhere near $13MM per year (as we read at MLBTR) but does mention Mickey Callaway. The first eyebrow raising answer is to the question if he credits Long and Rossler for changing his approach, but he says that he credits himself mostly. Then goes on the mention those two, two more times in how they changed his mindset, his approach… like everything. You’re welcome Jay.
Don’t expect to read anything interesting until the second half of the article.
Getting back to Jose: on paper Phil Evens seems to be a better fit to replace the beloved fan favorite. Yet to pull the pug this early would appear to be a sign of panic by the front office. So many negative connotations by making such a quick move…there’s need for cohesion for the players.
Now, fast forward to the all star break with poor performance by Jose, well that’s a whole another story.
I think Bruce’s foot is worse than we’re being let on to. He is now hitting .190 and if you take away his grand slam in DC, he’s got zero home runs and just 3 RBI.
The other hitter who is concerning me is Conforto. He seems to be late on every pitch — even off speed pitches — and he seems to be chasing more than I recall him doing last year. Nearly all of his hits are to left, though I do recall a fairly weak grounder being a single to right earlier in the season. Does anyone recall any ball he has hit hard to right or center field? I sure can’t.

For Jose, I would add he offers speed, something which is missing on this team. He has the talent to be a good weapon and his desire only to play for the Mets will keep him cheap and thus in the Coupons good graces.
As for Jay, you may be right. But while we think it may be his mochismo hurting the team, it may be his brain saying ‘don’t let Nimmo take your spot. You’ll never get it back!’ But hey, he’s a leader!!
Reyes its done. Waste of a roster spot. Same with Harvey. Time to move on.
Whatever fanciful imagination of having it be 2008 again and having reyes and wright on the infield together is no different than waiting for Tinker, Evers, and Chance.
The Slumps have become conspicuous as the lineup has been shortened by the loss of Plawecki and d’Arnaud. Rosario’s struggles are predictable— he’s keeping himself barely alive, but I think he’s going to gut through and shine.
It’s never as good as it looks or as bad as it looks—it’s a very long season. I like the team!
With their three big bats all slumping at once, it’s amazing that the Mets were able to gut out a win like tonight. Cabrera has been fantastic, our MVP so far, and Frazier has been a great addition. 14-5 despite the meat of the order struggling really says something about this ball club.
As for Reyes I think it’s a bit premature to talk about releasing him. His most important role on the team is insurance in case Rosario gets injured. Nobody wants to see Cabrera or Flores over there. I don’t believe Checchini, Guillorme, Evans or anyone else in the minors could provide the spark that Reyes can when he’s on. He showed us at the end of last year that he can still contribute. He’s older and Dominican so he’s allergic to cold weather. He’ll come around. If the infield is still intact when T.J. Rivera comes back, that’s a different story. I thought he’d be back by Memorial Day, but I read somewhere today that it may be more like All-Star break. Not sure if that’s accurate.
