It’s hard to think about something worse than watching the Mets get pounded by the Braves while being subjected to the Atlanta announcers. But somehow the Mets found a way. The Mets lost ace Jacob deGrom for an unspecified time due to a hyperextended elbow.

Other stuff happened in the game. Most of it bad. But I’m too stunned and depressed to care.

Shutout, JDG injured and knocked out of first place. And the Nats are heating up. I have a Mets shot glass that I save for nights like this.

  • TJ

Tonight was an utter train wreck for the Mets, and with JDG going down it is hard to think it could have been any worse. But, stepping back to look at the bigger picture, which includes the series in Atlanta, I see a Braves team that is better than the Mets right now. Most troubling is how much better their young pitching looks compared to all Met starters not name Jake or Noah. Combine that with the continued Met injury woes, and the terrible performances of Rosario and Conforto, and the trend line is not good. Without Jake, the Mets look like the 4th best team in the NL East, and that may even be the case with him.

Just pray that it’s minor and Jake only misses a few starts. Let’s hope he didn’t damage it further in his last inning pitched. Callaway has been given a little leeway because if Collins, Wartheun and Ramirez were still here there would be hell to pay.

The first two weeks of the season seem like years ago. What a bad stretch. But, it is a long season.

Now you see what a good farm system and getting good prospects in trades can do for you. The Braves are a good team.

So, what is going to happen ? Do you think Gonzalez catches lighting in a bottle, Reyes wakes up and Harvey grows up and gets mentally strong ? Probably not.

It’s time for Bruce to go to first and probably a good time to see what Oswalt or Flexen can do.

Let’s hope that Jake only hyper-extended the elbow.

Next man up; the Mets are due for a young guy to breakout and surprise everyone (a la Degrom). Oswalt, Flexen, Conlon?

I’d like to see Lugo stay in the pen, I’d like to Vargas put together a strong start, I’d like to see Thor round out to his ultimate form, and I’d like to see Harvey off the team. I’d take any 3 of the 4 though…

I think the Mets get a gold star for spending a month in first place.

    • TexasGusCC

Chris, they’ll be back in first place tomorrow. And, JDG will only miss three or so starts, as he does physical therapy to strengthen the elbow muscles, while Lugo will fill in admirably. And, Alderson will announce they are bringing up Johnny Monell. And, Nimmo will start and never sit again.

Too, now is the time to see who the real leaders are, and who just talks a good game. I have my suspicions who fit into the latter category.

      • Chris F

Johnny Monnell? Nimmo full time? Lugo? I got news for you, that’s putting a band-aid on a stab wound.

  • TexasGusCC

Callaway said after the game that it doesn’t hurt when he throws, only when he swings.

  • Mike Young

Brian – I totally agree with your comment about the the Braves booth announcers, Caray and Simpson. They along with FP and Carpenter of Gnats fame epitomize, in my opinion, the meaning of the description: “homies” in the worst sense of the word.

It’s a Perfect Shit Storm— Big Holes in the Lineup, and Big Holes in the Rotation.

I’m sure they don’t want to do a major trade ahead of assessing whether this team is “in or out”, but the Catching situation needs a Patch–at the very least! If Plawecki returns and catches 80% of the games, they still lack an MLB Player as the 2nd catcher. Meanwhile, He’s still out.

The Lineup is fixable. The Starting Pitching?????? Wheeler, Matz, Harvey— can even one of them run 5-6 innings on a regular schedule? I will assume that Vargas can. This looked Grim before Jake was injured…. what now?

It’s rare that things are as bad as they look when things are looking bad— this is an exception to that rule.

    • Chris F

Yup. But Just a minor disagreement Eraff:
“It’s rare that things are as bad as they look when things are looking bad”

Actually, things are worse than they look if you ask me. See Gus’ comment about Frazier below.

Yep. Last night was numbing. Now we will see who the guys are to truly lead this club. It was easy to point at guys and saying how solid they are when the club is 11-1. Now that we’re 6-10 since then, and staring down the abyss with deGrom, we will be able to see who the keepers are.
BTW, thank you Todd Frazier for backing up what I’ve been saying for a long, long time — home plate umpiring is atrocious in nearly every game played across MLB.

  • TexasGusCC

Concerning Frazier’s comments, I’m very disappointed to hear them. Throughout history, we have heard bitching about the officials. Funny, winning teams just shut up and keep playing. You got blown out buddy, and if you allowed it to go to your head, that’s a “you” problem. Concerning strikes, umpires are right 98-99% of the time and the K-Zones show that. Just shut-up and start being better as a team.

Only losers bitch about splitting hairs. They got killed in San Diego on Saturday night, so he wanted a meeting then too? Give me a break, “Leader”.

    • Pete In Iowa

Gus we can agree or disagree about whether Frazier’s remarks are appropriate or out of line and that’s fine.
However, I must disagree with you when you state the umpires are right 98 to 99 percent of the time on ball and strike calls. They simply are not correct at a rate that high. In almost every game I watch, there are — at an absolute minimum — 15-20 incorrect ball and strike calls. If there are about 250 – 300 pitches per game, this is a miss rate of roughly 8 percent. That is wholly unacceptable.
For all the baloney which MLB (and all other sports) tell us about replay “getting the call right,” this is one area which truly needs some sort of electronic system for getting these calls correct. There is a big, big difference between a 1-2 or 2-1 count on a hitter. This is not something to be taken lightly.

    • TJ

That home plate ump last night was terrible, it reminded me of when Glavine got all those calls vs. the Mets and then got none of those calls when he came to the Mets and MLB implemented statcast technology that exposed the bad calls.

That said, I am also very disappointed in Mr. Frazier. That is not the conduct of a leader, and hopefully he regrets it although public damage was done. Get yourself kicked out of the game, kick some dirt, etc, but whining publicly after the Braves have dominated your line up is, to quote are GM, “bad optics”.

  • Mike Walczak

Bruce, Frazier, Cespedes, Cabrera and Gonzalez are on the north side of 30. (5/8) of The starters. The team is old and slow. Waiting for the HR is not going to save them. They need to get younger.
