The Phillies used a three-run sixth inning to claim a 4-2 win over the Mets Sunday in a game delayed at the start by rain.

The game marked the return of Jacob deGrom but the Mets hardly got a vintage version of their ace. He needed 45 pitches to escape the first inning and did not return for the second.

Yoenis Cespedes got the Mets on the board first with a solo homer in the top of the sixth. But the Phillies answered back when Nick Williams delivered a two-out, three-run blast in the bottom of the inning.

The Mets answered back in the top of the seventh when Brandon Nimmo delivered a two-out hit and Asdrubal Cabrera drove him home with a double that nearly went out of the park.

But Jeurys Familia gave that run back in the eighth inning, as he allowed a solo homer to Carlos Santana. In the ninth inning, the Mets tried the same formula that worked for them in the seventh, as Nimmo got on base with two outs, this time by a walk. But this time Cabrera’s deep drive to the outfield was caught for the final out of the game.

The top of the order was productive for the Mets, with Nimmo, Cabrera and Cespedes each delivering two hits and Nimmo also providing two walks.

Sewald pitching his second full inning and pitching to a lefty in a big spot was questionable to me. In fact, watching the game at work (it was Mother’s Day), when Nick Williams came to the plate and I saw Sewald was staying in the game, I got up and just walked away from the laptop very worriedly. Sure enough, in a few minutes I heard the crowd roar and I knew it was bad, but came back to see how bad. Can someone please explain why the second lefty was sent back over Corey Oswalt or even Dominic Smith, if they weren’t going to start him today either?

The first inning changed this game. Flores striking out with the bases full and one out, killed the scoring chance. Then, their batter just fouled off the entire umpire’s allotment of baseballs force deGrom to throw 45 pitches and removing him from the game while Nola kept going.

To me, the difference today was once more, the Mets left a small village on the bases and Callaway didn’t have the ammo to negotiate the sixth inning correctly.

Their batters* fouled off the umpire’s allotment of balls farcing deGrom to throw 45 pitches.

Sorry, didn’t proof read well enough and five minute Edit wasn’t offered.

    What a depressing performance! 11 hits..3 walks…2 runs????

Take an other 2 starts thru this rotation and start figuring out how to fix it—and whether you’re fixing “This Year’s Team”, or the teams that come in 2019/20/21.

The old saying about watching enough baseball you will see something you have never seen before was proven true once again on Sunday.
I certainly have never seen 45 pitches thrown resulting in one ball put into play. Think about that — 45 pitches and one (one!!!!) ball in play.
Certainly something I have never seen before and it’s overwhelmingly likely I never will again!
