The strength and tough attitude of Jacob deGrom was not enough for the Mets to win their game against the Miami Marlins as they fell 2-1.
While he did not toss as fantastic a start as his last time out, deGrom was efficient enough to be able to take care of the Marlins. In his last start, deGrom fanned 13 due to terrific accuracy with his pitches, and a low pitch count to boot. It was a little bit of a different story against the Marlins. While deGrom struck out nine, he had to put more effort than usual into getting his batters out. Often against the Marlins, deGrom had to battle against leadoff baserunners and multiple full counts. Through seven innings though, he threw 109 pitches, walked two, and allowed only four hits.
Offense came at a premium on the evening, and it was provided by a single swing. Brandon Nimmo ripped a home run in the bottom of the fifth. Nimmo was the best bat in the Mets lineup, as he reached base three times. My Gut Reaction is that Nimmo needs to keep getting starts, even if it is a lefty pitching. The more exposure he gets to lefty pitching, the better he will be prepared to battle against them. Also producing hits for the Mets tonight were Jay Bruce, Adrian Gonzalez, and Amed Rosario.
Out of the bullpen is where the Mets started to falter. After a solid inning from Seth Lugo, Jeurys Familia came into the ninth inning to try to close the game. He was unable to do so, as he allowed the Marlins to scratch two runs across on back to back RBI singles from J.T Realmuto and Starlin Castro.
This loss was a back-breaker for the Mets, as the schedule ahead becomes increasingly difficult. They will travel to face the Brewers and Braves before hosting the Cubs. Following the loss, the Mets dropped to 24-21. Tomorrow at 8:10, the Mets will face Zach Davies as Steven Matz takes the hill in Milwaukee.

They need to Bring in The Flash for a Special Entertainment during the game…. The first race: The Flash, Wilmer Flores, Adrian Gonzalez, and any randomly selected 36 year old Man in the stands—Adrian Gonzalez’s age.
How Far will they need to spot the field to compete with The Flash? Will Wilmer outpace The Gonz?…… Is The Randomly Selected Fan a Lock to Place?

Five runs in a three game series vs the worst pitching staff in baseball is beyond pathetic as is your 2-5 hitters going 1-15 vs Dan Strailly and friends in a close game. Jay Bruce is just killing the team with all the terrible non competitive at bats and he’s down 0-2 every freaking at bat. Bruce’s fly ball distance is way down he’s a one dimensional hitter not hitting homers so he’s beyond worthless. I hated his signing and don’t get why Sandy loves him but I didn’t see him cratering like this.
Nimmo and Gonzalez had good games with Nimmo getting on are three times and hitting a bomb but his teammates did nothing behind him.
Jacob deGrom did not have his best stuff or command but as he’s done most of his career found a way to keep a team down and deserved a better fate and the fact that the team is like .500 in his ten starts is beyond aggravating.
Familia just didn’t have his usual sink on his fastball and didn’t go to his slider up in the count to Castro and he and Mesoraco did a bad job pitch selection wise and really had a tough night.
This was an ugly loss to a miserable team by a brutal offensive team headed to a road trip vs two very good teams so this road trip could get very ugly.
Spot on with your comments about Bruce. He is on track to hit 12 Hrs this year and his 14 RBIs are the same as Rosario, who has batted in the 9 hole for most of the year. Our starting outfield has been awful this year. Just when you think Conforto is going on a tear he relapses. Cespedes, even on the DL, has over 50 Ks. Oddly Nimmo and Lagares have outperformed the starters.
David, I’m glad it was someone else talking about Bruce because I didn’t want to sound like a broken record, but his “single” last night was a dropped fly ball gift from the official scorer and Gary Cohen immediately and a few minutes later alluded to his standing at first base instead of second. In today’s NYP, Bruce says that he just “needs time” to get himself straightened out to which my response is FU. What is he going to do better when he’s already hitting his average? Getting your head out of your ass and not expecting all season’s at bats to give a two week hot stretch twice a year and say “See! I told you so!” shouldn’t “take time”.
Also, Callaway last night said that Nimmo will lead off every game no matter what. I loved that, a meritocracy sounds nice but The Snob doesn’t think that way. So: Nimmo leads off; Cespedes bats third (when he comes back); Let whoever produces best get the last spot. Good job Mickey.

Otherwise, I am struggling to find any reason for optimism here. Virtually no offense vs a terrible pitching staff, the 4 th blown save already for the closer. As every day in the 2018 season passes, despite a winning record, the future gets more concerning. Will the return of Cespedes, Frazier, and Plawecki even matter?
Btw….. I’m generally loathe to criticize a young player, but Guillorme looks like he has no offensive talent to compete at this level
