The Mets ended their eight-game losing streak and avoided getting swept by the Yankees with a surprising 2-0 win. It marks the first time the cross-town juggernaut has been shut out this season, and it came courtesy of a gutsy pitching performance by Seth Lugo.

Lugo was nothing short of brilliant, holding the Yankees to just two hits and no runs over six innings. Robert Gsellman and Anthony Swarzak flirted with danger, but stranded base runners in the eighth and ninth to make the small lead stick. Jose Reyes, filling in at second base for Asdrubal Cabrera who exited the game with a sore foot, did his best to give the game away with an inexcusable botched play in the eighth inning that resulted in being scored with two errors and two safe runners. It was a routine double play, but Reyes first missed stepping on second base and then threw the ball 15 feet wide of first base. Thankfully, Gsellman kept his cool and was able to get two more outs in the inning without allowing a runner to score.

Todd Frazier‘s two-run home run in the fifth inning provided all the offense the Met needed. Pedro Severino was his usual unhittable self, but Frazier guessed right on a 2-2 slider and was able to drive it over the left field wall to give the Mets the lead.

Aside from Frazier’s homer, the Mets managed just four singles. The ice cold Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto went a combined 0 for 6 and are now batting .219 and .213 respectively. This, as much as the injuries, explains the futility of the Mets lineup. At least for a moment, we have something to smile about. Next up, road trip starting with the Braves.

Unbelievable job by Lugo channeling Lance McCullers using his curve more than any other pitch His changeup was also absolutely filthy and missed bats and induced weak contact and really and truly belongs in the rotation. Lugo has a fip of 2.66 and has a 9-47 BB-K ratio, he’s easily the third best starter on the team.

Gsellman did an unbelievable job picking up that idiot Reyes, who continues to embarrass himself, yeah yeah he got a hit ahead of Frazier’s homer. I dunno if any middle infielder screws up like that, enough already of that herb.

Swarzak was not very good but sometimes luck is on your side because Sanchez killed the ball and thankfully Frazier was positioned perfectly. The offense was terrible but Frazier came up big and looked good the last two games.

All in all finally a win lead by Lugo, who dominated a lineup that might hit the most homers a mlb team has ever hit. Dear Mets do the right thing and dump Reyes and AGon and keep Lugo in the rotation.

AGon is gone https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/06/mets-release-adrian-gonzalez.html rather have called up Alonso over Dom, who has been awful in Vegas

Awesome win. Lugo’s curve ball reminds me of Blyleven’s curve. He needs to be in the rotation.

Awesome news about Gonzalez. Now it’s Dom’s chance to put up or shut up.

Now it is time to get rid of Reyes. He is s joke. Can’t hit, can’t field, can’t throw. Looks like a little league.

Great job by Lugo and the pen.

Glad to see A-Gon is out. As soon as Flores is back, Reyes should be next. He appears lost mentally to me like at the very beginning of last season. He’s not focused. Bad enough he’s not hitting, but also making costly mistakes in the field. Guillorme at least has a good glove and can’t hit any worse. For impact I would have cut A-Gon, Reyes, Lobaton and Robles all in one shot. I’d actually keep Bautista as I think he has value as a pinch hitter, even after Ces returns.

      “after Ces returns.”

Will there be such a time? Post ASB is my guess.

Sure glad we won but I can’t get too excited scoring in one inning again and invisible the remainder of the time. Lugo was more than impressive and has earned a spot in the starting rotation.

Sure good to finally get a win.
One question for Mickey: What in the world is Guillorme doing on the bench instead of being at second base in the eighth inning of a 2-0 game????????
Supposedly, the best glove in the organization, and he’s on the bench? Oh, and BTW, if there was any question of thinning the bench, Guillorme is hitting about 60 points higher than old man Reyes. Maybe he should have gone in for Cabrera in the first place.
Completely, utterly and ridiculously baffling. Luckily, this non-move didn’t cost us the game.
