With an 8-3 drubbing, the New York Mets fell for the second consecutive night to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

For the first three innings of the game, it was a battle between the two of the biggest names in National League pitching. For the Mets, their ace Jacob deGrom took the hill and put out a quality start for his team. He was able to muster six innings of three run pitching, allowing three walks and striking out six. His walks were concerning, as usually his control is impeccable. His walks were able to set the Dodgers up for easier access to score runs.

Walks were a common theme amongst Mets pitchers during the game, and it only got worse as the night went along. Robert Gsellman, who started the season off very strongly, struggled mightily against the Dodgers. His final stat line was one walk and five earned runs over two innings of work. The big blow of the night came off of Gsellman, as he allowed a grand slam to Matt Kemp in the eighth.

The offense was formidable tonight, as Jose Bautista continued his current streak of hot hitting. After hitting his first home run with the team in the first game against the Dodgers, Bautista hit another tonight in eighth inning. This was Bautista’s second hit on the night, the first coming in the form of an RBI double in the second inning. Brandon Nimmo had three hits, Todd Frazier had two, and Wilmer Flores, Michael Conforto, and deGrom each had one.

In his Major League debut, Drew Smith produced a scoreless ninth inning. He was having a successful season down in Las Vegas, so his contributions to the team will be warmly welcomed. My Gut Reaction is that Smith will have success in the big leagues and only have a positive impact on the team.

This will be another tough home loss for the Mets to swallow, as their overall record dropped to 31-43. They will try to salvage the last game of the season on Sunday, as Rich Hill will take the mound against a Mets pitcher to be named tomorrow, as Jason Vargas landed himself on the disabled list with a strained calf.

Chris F – that was my bad.

Disagree on Robles I still believed he could be salvaged even after as badly as he’s pitched the last two years. He was very solid his first two years but just fell off a cliff last year. I will always remember his dominant outing vs the Nats on Labor Day in 2015 in a close game with Reed and Clippard unavailable. I also remember him getting a 2 or 3 inning save vs the Phillies in 2016 with Reed and Familia unavailable late in the year.

Sorry, but Robles has been given enough chances. I used to like his arm and that he was not afraid to pitch inside but he has worn out his welcome here. Typical Robles inning was 2 quick Ks, home run, single, home run, then lifted.

This team is unwatchable. I pray to God the Wilpons sell the team. That isn’t going to happen anytime soon so I hope Sandy retires immediately. What a disaster in off season signings——Bruce, Vargas, Ramos, Frazier, et al. Speaking of Frazier, the man is a bum. He apologizes to Jake for the team’s lack of support last week and then has an historical at bat in the 7th when he could at least get him off the hook. No, he takes a first pitch ball then takes 3 fastballs over the middle of the plate. What in God’s name was he looking for???

Michael, while I wouldn’t call him a bum, this player has no business hitting in the heart of the order. But as I’ve said many times, the Mess are a team of politics and popularity contests. Just a joke organization, and some day we may hear things about protocol for this team that will make our eyes bug out.

Otherwise, I agree with your comment. I liked Ramos, but they stuck with him too long and he was hurt. At this point, I don’t want Cespedes coming back – just have surgery already. I want to evaluate Flores at second base and play him everyday somewhere, and I want to see what Dom Smith can offer. Bruce, Cabrera, Familia, Blevins, and Vargas can be shipped off for the best we can do, it I wonder if the Coupons would add salary into the deal.

Jake wasn’t anywhere near his sharpest but he still deserved better and the offense continue to strand dozens of runners. Bautista and Nimmo has excellent games but the rest of the bats were flaccid and were putting up putrid at bats wrisp but hey just one double play you had strike outs. Gsellman has had an up and down season and the last few games have been ugly. The strike outs have dried up for Gsellman and the walk rate is way too high, time will tell if he can become a big piece for the future. Pretty crappy game for Cabrera in particular and it really this team should be this bad but every game they do just enough to lose.

Chris Flexen was recalled. If he pitches it’s like a forfeit. He is not a major league pitcher in my estimation. There must be someone else we give a chance.
