Noah Syndergaard returned to action with a flourish, pitching and hitting the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Nationals Friday night.
Syndergaard scattered seven hits over five innings and allowed just one run. He also delivered an RBI single that gave the Mets a 4-0 lead.
The Mets gave Syndergaard an early lead, as they tallied three runs in the first inning, thanks to RBI singles from Jose Bautista and Devin Mesoraco and a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Flores. Brandon Nimmo finished with three hits and Amed Rosario had two, with a double and a triple. The mental break given Rosario really seems to have paid dividends.
For a change, the Mets got solid relief pitching, as Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman combined for four innings of one-run ball, with each pitcher going two innings. Gsellman gave up the run but also got credit for the Save, his fourth of the season. It’s looking more and more like he will take over as closer if and when Jeurys Familia is dealt.
Mental break paid dividends? That’s some mighty fine front office kind of spin right there. 🙂

The problem with the Mets, or at least one of their problems, is there is so much presssure on rookies to perform and unlike other teams we do not have sure things with our highly rated prospects. With the season escaping us, short of a major turnaround, we still need our kids to have constant playing time like Rosario, Nimmo, Smith, and Conforto. Even yesterday the team mustered three quick runs that held up but the offense still sputtered after that. It’s clean house month again but let’s hope there are some ML ready talent coming in return and if not someone who can get a better crop of prospects than last year where no one really seemed ready to step up and shine with the big team.
