We’ve reached the All-Star break, the time where we hope a bunch of days off will heal the bullpen and everything else that ails the team. Assuming no trades over the break – which may not be a safe assumption with Sandy Alderson no longer running the show – the fifth game back is likely to have Jason Vargas back in the rotation, if his last rehab game is any indication. He pitched six innings and amassed 10 strikeouts for Brooklyn.

The interesting thing to see is what the Mets will do with Corey Oswalt when that happens. Do they send him back to the minors to continue working as a starter? In his three July starts, Oswalt has a 3.60 ERA (3.48 FIP) and a 0.800 WHIP. Or do they move him to the bullpen to add to Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman as a guy to pitch three innings at a time? Either way, Vargas’ leash should be a short one. After an 8.60 ERA through nine starts, he should no longer be gifted a spot in the rotation.

Problem is Callaway will not use him for 3 innings. Leave him in the rotation. Build for 2019. Lets stop trying to fix a broken pen with no hope for 2018. Lets dump players who can’t stay healthy enough to make a difference. Can the scouts try to identify players for the trading deadline and after? Make decisions now about how this team is going to approach a rebuilding. I’m tired of watching the stop gap old vets filling the void year in and year out. I’m tired of health being an issue. It’s a disgrace.

      I agree 100%.

Flo is playing Most days…and that’s agreeable because he does have some future possibilities here, and he may have trade value.

Of all the people who you could say “I Love Him. But…”, I think we all mean it about Flo. He’s obviously a Great Kid, and He does have some ability to go with extraordinary limitations—- he has a much better shot and higher value as a guy who can ad DH to his Positions played. A trade will be good for Him.

JBats???….Jose????? JBats has some swings left to him—let him chase a spot in a Pennant Race–It’s the right thing to do on so many levels. He’s useful, but He’s not Prospect Bait….don;t hold hom hostage, and don;t allow him to be a reason to sit young players.

Jose is a favorite for Me…and He’s cooked. Save the possible Jose-David Reunion for another day. I don’t believe they can play together again—and I believe they Shouldn’t!!!! It’s over!

Give Smith and NcNeill ab’s—see if they’re useable. Let’s move forward.

Baseball Wise, this is certainly a low point rivaled only by the Post Seaver events, and the Post Madoff scene.

The team is adrift, with obvious front-office disarray. They have “Dead Men Playing”, Prospects and Suspects stagnating, while wasting an opportunity to take the First Next Steps needed to Fix The Baseball!

If I were DeGrom, I would not throw a Pitch in 2019 without a commitment from the FO–both Contract and Team Direction….otherwise, He should demand a Trade.

And, by the way— how many notations have been added to NY Post Articles about deGrom’s “past arm troubles”…???? Where does that nonsense come from?…Jeff? The guy has been both Healthy and Outstanding since TJ Surgery almost 10 years ago. What a shit Show!!!

The Yankees. The Post also writes that Cashman will not trade Torres. It seems the Yankees are prepping the fans through the Post. Actually, the Coupons use the Daily News. Besides, why would you put “arm troubles” in the news two and a half years before his control runs out? Maybe you put it out there because you want to keep the trade value down?

Fact of the matter is, if the Yankees want to win, they need to reach down deep for deGrom. If not, then that’s on them. Cashman has been bush league since the beginning of June on this, reading all kinds of Yankees’ side of stuff in the Post and not once the Mets’ side.

Hard to ask since the Mets now have a 3 headed hydra in the FO.
No need for the foul language. The Mets are foul enough to watch

Brian Bannister, one of the Red Sox pitching gurus tweeted – deGrom releases the ball almost a foot closer to home plate than most pitchers because he uses his legs so well. Shortstops that switch to pitching often have significant biomechanical advantages because of their natural athleticism and create unique planes as a result.

Just to piss Brian Cashman off a bit.

      Ha!

Did you hear what the Dodgers gave up for a rental, because they want to win? Teams give up more during the season, but more teams are in it during the winter. Cashman knows he can’t beat the Astros with Happ and his current staff, he needs a real ace. Minaya better get it all! Torres, Sheffield, Florial, a catching prospect as the Yankees have many, and another arm. Anything less is a mistake. Cashman either ponies up, or explains to his fans why he didn’t go after it like the Dodgers did. Cashman has the offense, but his pitching is not championship caliber. And Carlos Martinez is not an option because he has had arm issues, although he would be pretty close to DeGrom.

Tonight was a beautiful night for the Orioles and the Mets. Look at what the Dodgers gave up for a rental! And if you hear the talking heads, it’s not a deal Andrew Friedman likes making, but the Dodgers haven’t won in a long time. Wink, wink. See Brian, you have to give to get.

If he needs a sweetener, I would consider a swap of Lagares for Ellsbury. Ellsbury was having a good spring and then got hurt.

      • TexasGusCC

Maybe Bruce instead of Lagares? Bruce can DH… The Yankees save about $20MM… I would only do this sweetener thing if we got everything we want, meaning the fourth and fifth prospects we want. The top three aren’t open for discussion.
