In a game delayed by rain, the Mets took a little while to get going but then exploded for six runs en route to a 6-4 win over the Padres. It was the first series win for the Mets since they swept the Diamondbaccks May 18-20.

The Mets did not have a runner reach base in any of the first four innings. But Jose Bautista drew a leadoff walk to start the fifth and came around to score on a one-out single by Kevin Plawecki. The Padres, who were not exactly playing textbook baseball up until this point, with bad baserunning, decided to add bad fielding into the mix. Brandon Nimmo hit a comebacker which should have been an inning-ending double play. But a poor throw by the pitcher to second base resulted in just one out and the Mets were able to tack three more runs in the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Included in the big inning was the decision to pinch hit for starter Corey Oswalt with two runners on and two outs. Oswalt had been effective, if not particularly dominant, up until that point. Philip Evans delivered an RBI single to tie the game and after a passed ball, Amed Rosario stroked a two-run single to center.

Bautista, who got things going in the fifth inning, added a two-run homer in the sixth. It was a no doubter, which hit off the facing of the second deck in left center. Bautista also made a nice running catch to save a run to end the fourth inning.

The Mets used three pitchers to close out the game, with Anthony Swarzak going the final two innings to pick up the Save. Didn’t feel good to see him come in the game and was surprised when Mickey Callaway asked him to go two innings. But it worked out fine and just made me wonder what it would have been like if the Mets had this version of Swarzak available all year.

Gary Cohen pretty much had the same reaction. Callaway said he didn’t start McNeill because it was a lefty and he didn’t start Evans because he was battling a virus.

    A series win. Yay!

If they deal a starter the return better be huge. I mean, two quality prospects that will be good regulars in the bigs next year.

I’m losing a bit of Patience with Calloway. If He’s playing for the wins right now because he thinks he needs wins, then He doesn’t have enough balls to Manage a team when Wins really count.

They need to ID McNeil right now….maybe find a useable piece thats been ignored.

I’d be willing to bet that Rosario and Bautista are sitting tonight
