Jacob Rhame‘s numbers this year are bad. But in his last 10 games, well, they’re horrible. Here’s his combined line over that time frame:

10.1 IP, 18 H, 13 ER, 2 BB, 8 Ks, 5 HR

That’s an 11.32 ERA, a 1.213 OPS allowed and a .498 wOBA. And I know you’ll be shocked but the team is 0-10 in that stretch.

And Mickey Callaway wants to give him more high-leverage situations because?

I look forward to DeGrom showing Brian Cashman that made a very big mistake not parting with Torres to acquire the pitcher that can take him to the promised land. Cashman can hang onto his jewel, and let’s see how many games Torres wins him. Foolish, foolish, foolish. Three postseasons of control of one of MLB’s best pitchers, and he cried about a prospect. How un-Dodger-ish. How Wilponian.

      thats a good one Gus!

Thanks Chris. It’s nothing we were not posting three weeks to a month ago.

I believe after 2/3 of a season, that Callaway was a terrible choice. He continuously says and does dumb things.

The Mets are also considering people for GM, with no GM experience, awesome.

    This organization is the pits.

    • TexasGusCC

Mike, I need to disagree with you on this. Callaway was brought in the expand the pitchers, and he did. Forced Matz to grow up, made Wheeler better, helped Gsellman and Lugo step up, and I think they have much more work to do this off-season with the kids.

The hitting however, is not their fault. The Alderson mess speaks for itself. Understand, the Mets wanted to trade Wheeler and Flores for a rental, Gomez – because Gomez would just flick the switch and be super again; wanted to trade Nimmo with Wotell for Bruce but we’re forced to trade Alderson’s prized steal Herrera because Nimmo’s knee issues troubled the Reds the Reds weren’t happy unloading him on some suckers, they were greedy too. Serves three right); and if Alderson was still GM, I quiver at how many relievers and wind mills he would have given up DeGrom for. Even in the Dickey deal, the Mets wanted a different prospect, Aaron Sanchez, not Syndergaard – good, but not as good.

Seems to me the Mess are remarkably better off than they wanted to be, by their decisions. Callaway can’t fix stupid – as we say in Texas. I like and respect Alderson as a person, but his scouting and evaluation people were probably the worst in baseball. Just like his three person analytics department, when others have 20-30 and now want to be less analytical.

I like an experienced guy like Girardi in the dugout.

What matters is where do we go from here? Suck it up, lick our wounds and move forward.

        • TexasGusCC

Ok, I’ll take Girardi, but not many others. Just because they’re experienced doesn’t make them good. Girardi is good. Showalter is good. Problem is, Callaway hasn’t done emu thing to deserve the ax. But, business is business, I guess.

I was thinking him as soon as Cashman fired him, although they had just hired Callaway. However, Theo Epstein fired Rick Renteria to replace him with Joe Maddon when he became available. That’s cajones.

162 games… lots of losses…I remember when Torre, Francona, Charlie Manuel were considered idiots.

The “intelligent answers” to endless questions (repetitive) is that Calloway has 25 guys on the Roster, and they’re not all Major Leaguers. His present Bench is Reyes and Guillorme.

Head Scratching in-game moves???… yes…and I sometimes wonder about him and his bench coaches.

The present game is much more a Player’s Game—less tactics, aside from pitching choices. None of the choices work without Players

    • Madman

4 man bench limits moves and strategy. Teams used to carry a PH, guys like Staub,Stairs,Mota, to hit in the late innings.

    • Mike Walczak

Being fair, you are right. The roster is weak.

  • Madman

Stripling and Maeda can move the BP and not Vargas?

  • Eraff

Madman…there’s a big difference in what a team on a World Series path does versus a team that is evaluating next year’s options.

They need to see if Vargas is in or out for next year…. he can be horrible until he’s not horrible. No sense throwing him away now…. they can do that next spring or this winter

Overall comment…..We can’t criticize them for playing Vets to win more games while also criticizing them for pitching Vargas and losing more games. Entertainment…winning…..fan satisfaction—that’s all a backseat to evaluation now

    • Brian Joura

      I don’t agree with this.

Vargas is terrible and shouldn’t be gifted a spot in the rotation because he was good on another team in the past. He can prove he’s not washed up in low leverage spots in the bullpen rather than as a starting pitcher. The idea that they should go to a six-man and do juggling to keep JDG and Noah on a regular rotation so Vargas gets more shots to prove he’s not terrible – well, that’s horrible planning and execution. You’re letting the tail wag the dog.

      • Steve S.

Agree with Brian not agreeing. Stick Vargas in the pen and let him mop up for awhile. Let’s see if he can right the ship. If not, he does not deserve a spot in the rotation. The other five do.

        This smacks of Couponzi interference.

“Vargas is terrible and shouldn’t be gifted a spot in the rotation because he was good on another team in the past”

And yet you keep opining for Smith to get more chances.. because he was good for Vegas and Binghamton in the past? I don’t get the double standard you set for youngsters vs veterans.

        • Brian Joura

Because if everything breaks right for Vargas he gives you two more good years. If everything breaks right for Smith, he gives you six more good years. Because Corey Oswalt is better than Vargas right now and is likely better in the future and why should he have to get the short end of the stick because Vargas is a sunk cost? Because if the Mets promote Smith, we don’t have to see Wilmer Flores have brain farts at first base.

          • Name

So when a youngster is performing better than a veteran, you’ll use the “he’s better” card and even when the youngster isn’t performing well, you’ll use the “years of control” card.

Glad it’s a fair fight for both sides.

            • Brian Joura

Thanks for putting words in my mouth.

          • Eraff

Brian…I believe they’re serious about contending next year— a “2016 Vargas” would be nice to have, if that’s the case. He wouldn;t be the center of the Universe, but he would reclaim value as a piece for use or trade.

As for Wilmer…I think we may agree that we’ve seen enough— he’s a 5-6 million dollar bring back. Vaya con Dios, Wilmer!!!!!

      • Mike Walczak

I agree with you 100% Brian. Vargas has not earned the opportunity to start anymore games. The starts should be going to pitchers like Oswalt.

  • bananaman

They need to unload Reyes and call up Smith and give him a shot. The next three games are in AL stadiums, a perfect time to put Flores at DH, but if they do, who plays first, Bautista? Give me a break. Smith should be at first the next three games at least. We have Guillorme for back up IF’er, don’t need Reyes

  • MattyMets

Hansel Robles had big shoes to fill.

  • Madman

Gotta think the Mets hierarchy gives Reyes a start tonight. It’s probably his last game against the YAnks and his last game in Yankee Stadium. Loyalty!

    • Mike Walczak

F loyalty, enough is enough. He is a .200 hitter that hurts the team and has o future with them. Cut him

  • Eraff

(sorry for the mis-posts…email is wrong on the others)

  • Brian Joura

Earlier this year the Mets played the Orioles in a two-game series, held them to three runs total – and lost both games. It seems unlikely that the Mets will hold them to just three runs in the upcoming two games – as Vargas is pitching tonight – but it would be nice to pay them back with a sweep.
