The Mets have been playing pretty good ball of late. After the worst June imaginable that derailed the season, the Mets have played .500 ball since July 1. We’ve got a healthy and mostly effective rotation, Michael Conforto is hitting again, we got dead cat bounces out of Jose Bautista and now Austin Jackson, and a few of our young gunslingers in the pen are starting to look like keepers. Todd Frazier is back and started hitting. Jay Bruce and maybe even David Wright may soon be back as well. Where and how they fit in is yet to be determined.
The most important goal for the remainder of this season is to figure out who fits into the future plans and where. Is Bruce an outfielder or a first baseman? Who among the many kids in the bullpen can be trusted in a close game? Do we have our second baseman of the future? Will we need a catcher upgrade? Many other questions along those lines need to be answered.
But as we sort it out, the pressure is off and the team is getting at least somewhat healthy. With September games against the Braves, Phillies, Nationals, and Dodgers the Mets could pee in the punch bowl of playoff plans for a number of rivals.
Schadenfreude aside, the Mets could finish strong and climb back toward .500. To get there the Mets would have to go 30-24.  Not an impossible feat and one that would let us end the season on a positive note as we look to solve a lot of issues beginning November 1. As they say on Game of Thrones, winter is coming.

The Mets have the elements to contend in 2019. They must recognize that Zack Wheeler in the number two pitcher behind Jacob deGrom. Noah Sydenergaard has been more hype then anything else. The Mets need to sign Diamaondbacks free agent LHSP, Patrick Corbin during the offseason. Corbin is from Upstate NY, and probably would appreciate pitching with deGrom, Wheeler and the sometimes winning Sydergaard. That would give the Mets four good starting pitchers. Matz is the 5th pitcher who is not very good but he can be better if he ever gets his head on straight. Factor in Peter Alonso as the Mets 2019 1st baseman, McNeil at 2B, Rosario as SS, and Frazier at 3B along with Guillorme playing 3B, 2B and SS and Flores playing some 3B, 2B and 1B and TJ Rivera playing IF/OF. Nimmo in LF, Conforto in RF with hopefully the Mets signing both Charlie Blackmon for CF, and Austin Jackson as the 4th OFer. They also need to sign Yasmani Grandal as they need a catcher who can at least throw some runners out.

and keep watching our draft position get lower and lower…

i dont care about spoiling anyone else. Im worried about the Mets being the best team imaginable at some point.

besides, we scored 30 runs in 2 games, only to win 1.

winning is better then the orioles season

    • Chris F

      completely disagree.

Like Ricky Bobby says, if you aint first youre last.

Id much rather have a higher draft than worry about fininshing 10 under 500 verses 17 under 500.

      Conforto, Kelenic, Nimmo…

And all the other top 10 draftees…

Winter came early. It seems like it started in May.

    30 and 24 to reach .500?
    That’s not right.
They are 52 and 68; and there are only 42 games left, not 54.

The Mets are presently 16 games under .500, and must go 29-13 with 42 games left to reach .500. Thats a winning percentage of .690 — I think not. And to what end?

I honestly cannot see how finishing 10 under .500 is superior to 20 under .500; both are completely irrelevant. Im not advocating tanking. Im advocating for getting as much playing time for anyone not obviously part of the future (e.g., Reyes, Bautista, Mesoraco, Jackson and the like).

Let the record be what it will be. It simply makes no difference at all.

My math was a bit off as I wrote this earlier in the week. We’re out of last place and looking at Orioles record makes ours not seem so bad. I have a friend from Baltimore and he always says to me, at least you’re not paying Chris Davis.
