The Mets got standout performances from two of their offseason free agent signings and beat nemesis Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals, 3-0, Friday night.

It was unfathomable in, say, June that Jason Vargas and Jay Bruce would be heroes in the same game. But Vargas pitched six shutout innings while Bruce, in his first game back from an extended DL trip, hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to provide a little breathing room.
